There are many causes of pneumonia. However, bacteria are the most common causes of pneumonia. The most common bacterium that causes pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae, with 20% to 60% community-acquired pneumonias in adults and 13% to 38% in children. Staphylococcus aureus accounts for 10% to 15% of hospital-acquired pneumonias. It is most often associated with viral influenza and patients with a weakened immune system. Streptococcus pyogenes or Group A Streptococcus can also cause pneumonia.

Pneumonia is not a single disease. It can have over 30 different causes. There are five main causes of pneumonia:

- Bacteria
- Viruses
-Mycoplasmas
-Other infectious agents, such as fungi -- including pneumocystis
-Various chemicals

I get pneumonia frequently when I get sick. It started when I was 17--until then I had been very healthy. I got sick in April with the flu and wasn't properly treated. Then I got a cold in May and because of poor judgment on my doctor's part (he didn't do the proper diagnostics and failed to act quickly enough to treat me), I ended up with pneumonia a few weeks later. I missed the entire last two months of my senior year, including prom! :( I used to be on the track team but my lungs have been shot ever since--I get pneumonia at least once every two years now.

Pneumonia is a serious infection and/or inflammation of your lungs. The air sacs in the lungs fill with pus and other liquid. Oxygen has trouble reaching your blood. If there is too little oxygen in your blood, your body cells can't work properly. Because of this and spreading infection through the body pneumonia can cause death.

Some causes of pneumonia: chronic bronchitis or emphysema or a viral or bacterial infection you've picked. I would also imagine that someone with a lung tumor would be susceptible to pneumonia. I'm sure there are others & probably someone else could give you more info.

Pneumomia can either be caused by a bacteria or by a virus depending if the doctor diagnoses you with bacterial pneumonia or viral pneumonia. Either way it is a repiratory condition and usually treated with antibiotics and often times nebulizer breathing treatments.

First, pneumonia is not a skin condition. It is a respiratory condition that is caused by bacteria or a variety of other causes.
