exactly what is it? how does it start? does quicksand ever end going downward, sorta like a black hole, only it's has to stop somewhere in the earth? i think it's an interesting thing because it's so mysterious (to me anyway, i know nothing about them) so pretty much tell me anything you can. please don't answer if you don't have an answer to my question. thanks.

Quicksand is simply sand mixed with water until its almost a fluid. It can also happen in petroleum-rich regions when petrol bubbles up and turns sand into a soupy trap. I've put my foot in quicksand, and it really is quite difficult to pull yourself out!

The trick for surviving quicksand is to just let yourself float. The sand makes it far denser than ordinary water or oil, so if you don't struggle you just float on the surface and await rescue. Struggling will cause a victim to gradually work themselves deeper, and possibly drown.

It isn't at all like a black hole, more like very deep mud. You can only sink as far down as there is the correct mixture of sand and water for it to be soupy like that. You only find it in places with very fine sands and relatively little compression from waves and human feet, like swamps and the bottoms of slow-moving rivers. Too much compression or the wrong type of sand produces a walkable surface, like you see at most beaches.

Quicksand is just like any other type of bog or mire.
It happens when a waterproof pocket is formed in the earth's surface and it fills with water. This lubricates the grains of sand so that when you put your weight on them they just slide away from under you, and you sink. Struggling stirs up the water and makes the sand move even more. Quicksand gets denser as it gets deeper and although it can cover animals larger than humans, is not bottomless

Quicksand is just very very fine sand. The fineness makes it hard to get a grasp of it. Coarse sand is rough, so it 'sticks' to you, while quicksand simply falls off.
