Hello
No, they are separate independent nations. However, they are both part of the Commonwealth and both have the Queen Elizabeth II (of England) as their queen and head of state.
See below links for facts about both countries.

Interestingly, New Zealand was once part of the British Colony of New South Wales (which is part of Australia). Th is no longer the case. New Zealand hasn't been part of Australia since federation. We have different flags, by the way, we have very different accents (ask a New Zealand an Aussie to say 'fish and chips' and you'll hear the difference straight away). They don't have kangaroos. Most of NZ wildlife consists of birds, large and small, because of it's island nature. Australia, on the other hand, has lots of marsupials (animals with pouches), as well as our famous platypus, which has a beak, lays eggs, suckles it's young, and swims. It's a bit like an animal designed by a committee.

When Australia federated just over a hundred years ago the New Zealanders were asked if they wanted to join. After some hesitation they decided not to do so. So now they are their own sovereign nation. Probably something to do with free trade and protection which was one of the big issues then. Australia and New Zealand are among the oldest democracies in the world.
Their accents and vocabulary are different to that of Australia, in New Zealand the Scots background is stronger than in Australia, particularly in the South Island. There are plenty of people with Scots background in Australia but plenty with Irish and English background. Mine is all three.
The flag is different too, they have the Union Jack in the top left quadrant and the southern cross, but their stars are red while Australia has white stars. Below the Union Jack is blank in the NZ flag but Australia has a 7 pointed star, one point for each of the States and one for the Territories.

No they are different countries who have an extremely friendly relationship. There are a large amount of New Zealanders who live in Australia. Both countries people make jokes about the other, but when it comes down to it Aussies and Kiwis have a brother/sister relationship

hahaha! When I was NZ and Oz I heard so many jokes back and forth between the countries. They're like brothers that always tease each other. They always get linked together (like under the Australia/New Zealand question topic on yahoo answers :p), but they're totally different countries. The accents are different, the pace of life is different... and definately worth visiting :)
