they find this funny, i think its got something to do with a tv program, not sure though, please serious answers only

It's like the English pantomime, where one of the favourite bits of dialogue is "oh no, it isn't" and "Oh yes, it is".
In German "doch" as an answer to "nein" means "you are totally mistaken", or "don't be silly, go on!" if the "nein" was the answer to a well meant offer of food, etc.

doch is used for affirmacy!
nein is not!

"Nein" means "No", while when the reply is "Doch", that means "Yes it is"!
