I don't know why people react to snoring with agressive and violent suggestions - it is not the fault of the person who snores.

Snoring can be a symptom of a very serious disorder called sleep apnea, which can, if untreated, lead to heart damage and even death. If other people complain that someone snores very loudly, especially if they comment that sometimes he stops breathing for a moment and then start breathing again with a huge snort, the person really must go to a sleep clinic for a diagnosis. ASAP.

If a person snores softly once in a while, then this is probably not apnea, but if he shakes the house, snores like a bear, and drives you to the guest bedroom, then apnea is a distinct probability. It sounds like your husband is in the latter group!

Apnea is usually treated with the use of a device called a CPAP. He can't just buy one of these - they are sold only on prescription, as the pressure needs to be adjusted to his individual needs, with too high pressure being as dangerous as too low. CPAP stops snoring 100% and usually makes the patient (and spouse) feel generally more energetic and alert during the day as well.

Please ask your doctor to refer him to a sleep clinic right away. They usually have a long waiting list, and it's important to get the process started as soon as possible.

Good luck - and sweet dreams!

Send him to the doctor to be checked for medical reasons for snoring such as sleep apnea enlarged adenoids, blocked nasal passages, etc. Snoring can be serious and cause long term health problems.

My husband snored so loud I would wake up and cry because I hadn't slept hardly at all for nights. He was so loud there was no place to escape the noise in the house and I slept on the deck a few nights. He was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and is on a C-PAP machine. We both sleep so much better and he has lots more energy. He resisted going to the doctor but I am so glad I insisted.

Good luck. And MAKE him go to the doctor - you need your rest!!!

1. Get ear plugs
2. Get a sleep study for your husband to find out if there are other problems related to his snoring, such as sleep apnea.
3. Ask your dentist about an anti-snoring appliance.
