A so-called friend of mine borrowed a lot of money from me, she said she was going to pay me back within two weeks. It has been a month and she said she was going to pay me back today, she is not answering the phone and I have a feeling she left the country either last night or this morning. I'm finding out a lot about her now and she has a lot of drama going on. I even heard that the police are looking for her...for stealing. What are my options?

In reality or in theory?

In theory, you could track her down and begin proceedings against her.

In reality, the above would just be throwing good money after bad and wasting you time.

If she denies you LENDING her the money, can you prove you didn't give it to her out of the kindness of your heart. In fact can you prove you gave her anything at all?
If she doesn't have the money, you are not going to get it back
If she is out of the country, you are going to find it hard to find her
If the police are after her for theft, you are not even going to be the only person in line for payment.

I hate to say this, but I think although you can register this with the police, you might not want to waste too much more of your time/effort/emotions/money in this.

Time to move on with better frinds.

Since it was alot of money and after the two weeks were up ...you should have sued her........ if you knew where she was you could still sue her..take her to small claims court....hope you had her sign something or witnesses to the incident...or wrote her a check with the word loan in memo area..otherwise you are probably never going to see the money again, it's obvious you didn't know her either......and you learned a hard lesson..never loan anyone any money without documentaion........even family

You cant do any thing even if they stayed in the country if there was no written contract than there is no ablication to pay back never loan any body more than 100 dollars if its over that get it noterized with a date that it has to be paid back on if its incompleate than they can pay it back after you die and what good does that do you.

Well, if she left the country, we (Thee police (i work for the FBI) can't do anything, assuming that she stayed in th country, we can work on finding her, the local police would have to do this, the is no reason to start a federal investigation.

Sorry to tell you, but you don't have too many options. You probably didn't even have any written agreement about the money so what proof do you have? I would think you're out of the money.

Your friend did not steal from you, she breached the civil verbal contract you entered into with her. You'd have to take her to small claims court (depending on the dollar amount). If she has left the country then you are out of luck.
