i doubt they'll ever get along. its a bad idea to keep them in the same room because the bird gets too stressed out. i had the same situation and the bird died because it couldnt take it any longer. so keep the parakeet in a room lockrd away. and just to make sure he doesnt get eaten, put him somewhere where the cat can't reach him. try hanging the cage from the ceiling. those cages are very beautiful and safe

good luck, lena

depends on the cat, naturally they'll go after each other but sometimes if a cat grows up with that other animal, it might leave it alone. For example: I have my cat and my hamster, my old cat always went after my hamster so I had to keep one or the other locked up when i had the other out. But now i have a new kitten who could care less about the animals around him. So it doesn't matter much to him, usually now i let my guinea pigs run around the house whenever they feel like it and the cat ignores them. But YOU do not want to let your cat remain ignorant because if the kitten does notice the bird when your gone, you might just find a couple of feathers to remember him by. So slowly introduse each other and see how they react to one another. If the cat attacks, keep the bird locked up while your gone and the cat locked in another room when the bird is out. Otherwise you should be fine

Yes, he will eventually stop, and you can help make it quicker. Every time that you catch him trying to eat the bird, grab him by the scruff of the neck and tap his nose - not hard, just a little tap. That's how mama cats tell their kittens to behave. He'll get the message eventually that chasing the bird is a bad idea.

Although considering some of the parakeets I've heard about, you could just wait until the parakeet gets tired of being hunted and gives him a good chomp!

It's going to take a while! Kittens are in that "kitten" stage for about 1 1/2 years to 2 years. when he is older he wont try to eat your bird as much. but while he's a kitten you better keep that thing as far from that cat as you can. If you dont you might not have parakeet for much longer!

right now i have 4 cats and 1 dog and at first all they did was fight but after a few years or for about a year they begin to get to know each other and then get use to being around each other. with birds it might be very hard to get them both to get use to one another but truly they might not get to know each other because the bird is the cats main source of food but there is always some type of cat that will get along with there natural food. hope this helps.

it all depends on a cat but for now i would put the bird somewhere where the cat cant ge it an i would put a peice of wire or something on where the door to the bird cage is or something cuz cants do get in them an if your base of the cage comes off i would make sure you tie that down or something because cats have a way of getting in the cages. good luck

Bird are tougher than we give them credit for. Let your little bird give kitty a few nips and he will learn not to mess with him. You can help to train kitty away by using a spray bottle of water on him every time he gets near your bird. I would look for other deterrents at Petco or Petsmart as well. They have all sorts of things to keep kitty off the counter, couch, table, etc etc...

Good luck!

Small birds are a cats natural lunch, mine stopped trying to eat the baby chicks when they got too big & could defend themselves. Welcome to mother nature 101. If your parakeet is some type that will get big enough to defend itself, then the cat will stop trying to have it for lunch.

it's gonna take a lonnnnnnnnnnng time. kittens are usually fiesty little fellas for about 4 years. they just have too much unused energy to ignore a bird...
