I have braces right now and they only hurt for about four days. I also have two permanent retainers and they are pretty terrible. They aren't regular retainers, they glue them into your mouth. Drink milkshakes when you get them on. It numbs your gums and it soothes them too.
What not to eat:
Gum (if you have to chew gum chew a sugarless kind)
Things with caramel
Hard candy
Starburst
Skittles
Other gummy candy
Nuts
Corn on the cob (corn is fine as long as it isn't on the cob)
Apples and carrots (unless cut into peices)
Another thing: Don't put pens or pencils into your mouth. They can break brackets.
I have never broken a bracket yet, but my bands have come loose and I have had a wire snap and they can hurt. (They were from eating Starburst) Just remember they don't hurt for too long, you will live, they will come off sometime. You will get used to your braces after a little while and you won't be able to feel them. Good luck!

For me, they hurt a few hours after the procedure is actually done. They continue to hurt for..just about 2 days. My only problem is I can't chew so I have to bite things from my right side. It looks funky but it helps.
I've found that there's no way to make the pain stop. Your teeth are being pulled in different directions and there's a whole lotta pressure. No painkiller's gonna stop that. I've found that really cold water temporarily keeps the pain away.
They tell you not to eat anything hard or sugary. If you wanna eat a fruit or a veggie, your best bet is to make it into a smoothie. I followed their rules for the first month or two but I can't stop myself from gum and other things. I eat everything, regardless of how hard it is and how sugary it is. However, I always rinse my mouth with water after every meal, especially after a coke or candy. Otherwise, your brackets and things will kinda just fall eventually.

they are not bad. I just got my 2nd set off as an adult and the ortho said that adults have a harder time than youth. Just remember WAX IS YOUR FRIEND and do not eat hard candy and chew gum..... he brackets coming off is the worst part.
When you first get them on, you may need a tylenol. You may feel a little soreness but not enough to cry or stress over.
You will be fine. The worse part is the mold before and getting the brackets taken off..Oh, and the mold for your retainer...Good luck

I had braces a kid. The first few weeks were sooooo bad. I was in so much pain that I couldn't eat anything. As time went on things got better.

I learned one secret to braces. Always after the adjust them go eat something. They chewing keeps them from getting so sore you can't stand them. They are hurt really bad when you get them put on but after they are on for a while you get use to them. Remember the secret and it helps.
