I use a pedal bin, from Robert Dyas which can be lined with supermarket shopping bags.

My latest bin has a lid that you lift up and then it stays up. Means you can then use both hands to scrape scraps in etc. Obviously you do then have to shut it again.

I used to have a swing bin, but it kept swinging back so had to be held open, pretty useless if you are scraping rubbish into. Benefit is you dont have to remember to shut it.

Pedal bins are good if you are light on the pedal often the pedal breaks but it does stay open until you take your foot off and then shuts itself.

Any bin in the kitchen really must have a lid for hygiene reasons and also to keep any odours in.

Since you always toss the lids keep it out of site.

I would reccomened either:

Putting it under the kitchen sink, where you do not keep foods or anything else that could get tained with germs.

Or, Install a large drawer (again by the sink) away from foods. For the drawer you can find large bins to use as garbage cans. In the draws surrounding it, keep foods away.

I like a small bin so it gets emptied every day and I can use old supermarket bags in it (after they have been re-used for shopping tons - I'm funny like that) rather than pay for liners. A small bin means you empty it more and it doesn't smell as bad, I like a swing lid that I can was often.

built in bins are quite good. you can buy them from argos or homebase, they fit inside your kitchen unit, when you open the unit door the lid slides down throw the rubbish in the bin, then close the door the lid will go back on the bin. I hope you understand what I mean. they cost £30.

My preference is to not have a lid, but to keep a small trash bin under the sink and out of sight.

stainless steal large pedal bin, its hygienic, easy to wipe clean (I use glass cleaner to wipe over it to make it gleam) a good one will cost about £30 but will last a very long time & you wont have to keep throwing the lid away & replacing it! Hope this helps XX

Lash out and get one of those electronic bins that open when your hand gets near them. And if you do, let us know how you get on with it.
