It is a term usually defined as a person who is Jewish by birth that has come to believe that Messiah ben Yoseph (the suffering Messiah) came 2000 years ago as Yeshua. But, unlike a "Jewish Christian", a Messianic Jew is one who continues to be Torah observant - keeping the Biblical Feast Days (rejecting Christmas and Easter), not eating unclean animals (Easter ham, etc). Messianic Jews don't believe that Messiah ben David (the King) has come yet, which is why world peace hasn't broken out.
Except for a very small segment of the Reform Movement (Rabbi Daniel Cohen-Sherbok for example), Messianic Jews are considered to be heretics by the rest of Judaism.
Some would even claim that Messianic Jews are no longer Jews. However, the Lubavitcher Rebbe disagreed and said that if a person is born a Jew he is always a Jew all of his life, even if that Jew has gone so far as to convert to Catholicism:

Though obviously the community would not consider such a one to be a good Jew, but rather a sinner.

A jew who believes that Jesus was in fact the messiah that was prophesied. Other Jews do not believe in the divinity of Christ and are still waiting for the messiah,at least I believe that is right.
