First of all, the two technologies are different and therefore so is the quality.

Lcd Tvs are better off because they use light bulbs where as Plasma is gas filled. Similarly, LCD use less power as compared to Plasma.
Also to take note is that LCDs generally can be used in any lighting condition at all times ie day or night whereas Plasma has better contrast and colour.

What about an HD CRT screen? The slimline ones are acceptably thin and I've found the rear projection CRT's give a far superior picture to LCD and plasma and most HD CRT's support 1080 resolution another bonus is they are cheaper. Why have tube TV's been forgotten?? Sorry, just thought I'd give you another option to add to the list!

Personally, I find LCD always seems to be a more vibrant, cleaner picture, but plasma always looks best for bigger screens around the 40" mark.

several years ago, lcd was considered to be marginally better as the pixels would die at a slower rate than the plasma. However, the major problem for lcd manufacturers was that they weren't able to stablise pixels in panels more than 26" or so, which was what enabled the plasma screen to gain market position. These days lcd comes big with stabilisation and hardly any dead pixels, and plasma half life has been significantly improved. Some people prefer plasma due to dark "blacks" not pixelating, but it usually comes down to personal preference and which is easier on your eye.

I was told in a big television store that if your going to use anything like sky plus to never go for a plasma tv as you get picture burn on the screen, this is when you pause images.
