Sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome, but it's wise to ask your doctor to rule out anything else more sinister.
Many people find it difficult to sleep at night with this due to flexion of the wrists during sleep, which compresses the median nerve at the wrist. Try wearing wrist supports at nighttime, but don't fasten them too tightly! It could take up to 2 weeks for this to feel better at night, so if it doesn't work initially, hang in there and continue to wear them for a couple of weeks.
Let your doctor know if this works or not, as it will help them to diagnose you correctly. As mentioned previously, and EMG nerve test will give a conclusive diagnosis. This test is generally not given at a GP's office. Over the counter pain killers generally do not help nerve pain much.

Are you taking medication for anything else? I had the same sensation in my hands/wrists during the night - it woke me up several times. It felt like my skin was on fire, but a cold burning, not hot, if you understand! It went away when I stood up, shook my arms & flexed my fingers. I had also been tested for arthritis and rheumatism - all tests negative. Eventually, after about 12months, a consultant has told me what my GP should have realised all along - I take Levothyroxine for an underactvie thyroid, and the dosage was too high. It's been reduced now, and the hand/wrist pain is almost gone. It certainly doesn't wake me up any more, but I just get a few twinges when I first wake every morning. At least it's bearable now. If you do take other medication, it may be worth checking with your doctor about the possible side-effects?

Well it sounds like you do have something wrong with your wrists and hands. Do they fall asleep also. Mine did and they went in ad tested me for arthritis and it came back negative. When it kept on hurting me they found out it was carpel tunnel. They done the surgery and boy what a relief. So just asked to be tested for it.

It is possible that you may have carpel tunnel syndrome.. I had a similar problem about ten years ago and did the same as you. After suffering for a long time I had a EMG done by neurologist who confirmed that I had severe CTS in my right hand and moderate in my left. I am now taking several medication that have been prescribed by a physician.

Make sure you aren't sleeping with your hand(s) under your face or pillow that might cut off the circulation.
Check on the carpal tunnel issue. Before jumping into a surgical solution, check on other treatments. I personnally know two people that found relief with vitamin B6. My repeitive motion syndrome responded to rest and anti-inflammatories.

Sounds like it could be carpel tunnel. If it is, it can be corrected with surgery. Test for it is simple. They hook up some small electrodes to your hands and administer a mild current. Sort of like when you touch your tongue to a nine volt battery.
