Im just wondering what telephone service was around in the late 60's? was it Bell Atlantic or someone else?

It was all Bell that's for sure. If I recall the company was deemed a monopoly and forced to break up. Sherman Anti-trust?

There were some smaller local companies, mostly in rural markets where more line had to be strung for fewer customers. Other than that, it was the Bell system. As someone noted above, it was broken up. Here's an article:

Ma Bell was a favorite company to hate, so much so that I saw a movie where the heroes broke into an ominous building to find this super-overseer controlling all politics and economies from behind the scenes and it was...the telephone company! Well, it was mostly a gag. Lily Tomlin created the character Geraldine, an obnoxiously smug telephone operator who once declared, "We can do it because we're the phone company. If you don't like it, you can use two tin cans and a string!"

Well, of course, it depends on where you lived. Where I'm from it was Southwest Bell.
