Hey, he knows it isn't real, because it doesn't have a smell. He's intrigued, and after all, animals do know how to play!
Why do people play tennis? If you hit the ball over the net it comes back, if the person you're playing with is any good. Clap paws, squeal with glee.
Try chasing a shadow sometime--you might enjoy it.

Sounds like a combination of things: a dog's natural hunting instinct to chase anything that moves, the fact that a dog's eyes only see in black & white but are excellent at detecting movement (see above) and maybe a dash of what in a human would be called compulsive obsessive disorder.

Mine chases lights (torch, laser pointer) like they were solid objects, even searching for them when I turn them off.

well get I'm off that track he will soon chase everything so what you do is get a Lazar pointer and turn off mot of the lights in your house so the lighting is dim then use the laser pointer against walls and floors but not furniture hell might tear those up then play with him and he soon after 2-6 weeks he wont chase anything except that laser light then put away the laser and he wont have anything to chase and lose the habit completely

Sounds rather like a novel twist on tail-chasing to me.
He/she is just having fun it will only be a problem if the dog dooes it at inappropriate times!

Animals don't have the capacity to reason, and thus they do not know that it is "just a shadow". All they see is that something is moving and they will try to catch it.
