Sipping... if it's a gift include a brandy snifter. It's also great in recipes.
Sherry is a fortified wine, made in Spain from three types of grapes: Palomino, Pedro Ximénez, and Muscat (Moscatel). Sherry-style wines made in other countries often use other grape varieties.
Sherry differs from other wines because of how it is treated after fermentation. It is first fortified with brandy and then if destined to be fino style a yeast called flor is allowed to grow on top. Oloroso style is fortified to a strength where the flor cannot grow. (In contrast, port wine is fortified to a higher percentage of alcohol than sherry, effectively preventing the growth of any yeast.)

You can definitely drink sherry. It is a sweet wine.
Be aware that "cooking sherry" commonly sold in grocery stores is not very good for using in cooking or for drinking. Plus it is usually overpriced as well.

You can drink it. Usually cooking sherry is dry tasting and drinking sherry is sweet but if you like the taste of cooking sherry you can still drink it. I have friend who prefer its taste over sweet sherry.

Yes, you can drink Sherry. There is "cooking" Sherry and there is "dessert" Sherry. I would recommend drinking the "dessert" Sherry. It is a sweet wine.

make a trifle for dessert! Put spongecake or lady fingers in a straight sided bowl, saturate cake with 1/2 cup sherry, then layer with fruits such as blackberries, strawberries and whipped cream! Chill and serve!
