please be advised of the following

1. most countries have an alternative to those who are not passed fit to do National Service, unless it is Israel where they put you on "light duties" admin or driving work

2. Reasons given above for emptying prisons is naive, if we want a Nation to have a National Service then make it something to be PROUD of not a punishment that is what a court and jail is for

3. A lot of people are in prison for stupid things so we need the Law to reflect our modern society, change the laws and get people who do wrong to mend their ways productively

4. YES have a National Service and then get these well trained professionals to sort out the 1 million + things we have wrong in the country, clear contaminated rivers, build play areas for young children, rebuild facilities for the young to have recreation and sport indoors and outdoors.

5. Let out of prison people who have committed Minor offences and make them work with the community - supervised by National Service trained personnel, together we can put the GREAT back into Great Britain

6. The National Service could be used to support Project Griffin, google it and see its relation to the Police in this country, it 2 - 5 years we will need people for this

7. Discipline is only half the problem you need Self Discipline, this can not be taught but it can be encouraged

Would not work. The attitudes of society have moved on from the 1950's when it was phased out. Look at the classrooms and see the difference in education, not just the subjects but the ways of learning and teaching. The Services could not cope with the lack of fitness and indiscipline endemic in today's youth. The Services are a tight knit, highly disciplined and self motivated arm of society. We should be asking about the covenant we have with servicemen. They are shoddily treated and neglected by this administration.

People are not going to sign the official secrets act and join the Army to go to Iraq to get blow to pieces for Bush, Blair, Rumsfeld and co, theyr'e too smart for that! Everyone's talking about National Service when the country is in a mess over Afghanistan, Iraq. Another thing, will British Muslims, Blacks, and other Ethnic minorities join the Army if they are going to be racially abused once they are in it, they might end up fighting for the other side. Also an ethnic minority could fight for this country but the BNP would still argue to have them deported. Wake up! Get real!

good call!! This country is lacking several things, discipline being one of them!

Its a shame tought that we have gone too far the other way to bring it back into line.

Its a nice idea but realistically I dont think we will ever have the balls to do it. Thatcher was the only one that could have perhaps got away with it. Blair too much of a ***** and he'll be gone soon anyway

Bringing back national service would instill a sense of respect and discipline back into the nation. It would stop some of the younger citizens running around and causing havoc as they do, and would also cut down unemployment and give a lot of people a trade that they could use when they get back into a civilian environment.

It we brought back National Service, then women would have to do it too don't forget! Don't think i can be a*sed!

In answer to your question though, I do think this is a good idea, as I think it would lower the crime rate.

In principle it might sound a good idea but it is not practical or workable. Chances are that many of the conscripts would just cause more trouble than they are worth. Not only that but I think if you asked the armed forces if they want these people beside them in a fight they would say no.

i agree that something has to be done about all the trouble in the
country today, yes national service would cure some of that but it
would also teach the trouble makers how to be worse. if it was
brought back then i would strongly recommend that the instructors ie sergeants and corporals be allowed to treat the intake personnel the same as in the fifties and sixties and not as
they do now
