It's simple, to make them different from other religion.
So, others could respect them as they respect others too.
Muslims hold two main references, first is the Holy al Quran and second is as Sunnah (any words & practices from our Prophet Muhammad SAW).
Yes, some rules and guidelines for living being cited clearly in al Quran and some not, we need to figure it out through our critical thinking. So, to avoid any misinterpretation, we refer as Sunnah. Those two do help us to lead the best way of living as a Muslim. In Sunnah, the explaination are much more straightforward and details. Plus, we could refer Sirah Nabawiyah; Muhammad SAW ways of living. Then, I'm very sure that we got all the answers.
The main principle here is, Muslim women should cover all of her body except her face and both of her hands (fingers until palm only). So, we could find a different type of head covers for Muslim women including jilbab (headscarf), niqab & burqa'. For Sunni, most of us using jilbab but for Shii, they prefer to use niqab and burqa'.

The complete face covering isn't specifically mentioned, but women are supposed to have their heads covered. I personally don't agree with them only having their eyes showing but, as for the rest of the garb, it is much more decent than the clothes that most other girls wear.

Salam!
There are many benefits when women cover themselves up.
* They are not taken as objects of affection
* They are respected for their brain (intelligence) instead of how they dress
* They get rewarded for pleasing and obeying their Lord's order
* They are protected from evil and lustful glances of men who are out to steal their chastity (look at the number of rapes happening)
* Covering their whole body protects them from skin cancer (they are protected from direct sunlight)
* They represent modesty and loyalty towards Allah (GOD)
and there are gazillion others!
And yes, Qur'an does command muslim women to cover themselves up!
In Surah Nur there's a ayah that says
"tell the believing women to lower their gaze and pull their garments over their bosoms (niqab) and stay away from harmful glances" and there are even more references in the qur'an and the hadeeth.
Seek the truth, (God Wiling), you will find it!

If you really believe women should all be uncovered, then what will you be thinking of if all women in the high street were forced to show cleavage and muffin tops? Some fashion victims even feel obliged to shiver with this apparel in winter.
Bible (NIV):
7A man ought not to cover his head,[a] since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.
Footnotes:
1. 1 Corinthians 11:7 Or 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with long hair dishonors his head. 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with no covering (of hair) on her head dishonors her head—she is just like one of the "shorn women." 6 If a woman has no covering, let her be for now with short hair, but since it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair shorn or shaved, she should grow it again. 7 A man ought not to have long hair
Its embarrassing to see the display of flesh and "meat market" in most high streets in the summer. With the young ladies who have a good figure, what would you be thinking? Will you be admiring her intellectual assets?
The quran tells women to be modest. The way this is put into practice is found in the examples of the women and relatives of the companions and of the last prophet.
Quran:
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands' fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women's nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto Allah together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed.

Wearing modest clothes and a hijab is mentioned in the Qur'an. In countries where women cover head to toe, it is a custom-not a religious edict.

islamic teaching that women should dress modestly has been expanded upon by insecure , ignorant selfish, muslim men that make sure they are shielded from view and moreover social interraction.
lately we hear much more about the veil which is the ultimate social barrier.Originally the veil was used by both m and f to protect themselves from the harsh desert sands and has nothing whatsoever to do with islamic teachings.
Some of the veiled women paraded by the media that tell us it is personal choice are simply lying. They feel at best subliminal pressure from relatives and peers.Moderate muslim nations such as turkey feel they have no such need yet they still manage to fulfil all their religious duties.
Muslim women are oppressed my radical males and often never recieve the education or family standing to be able to recognise or challenge that oppression.

We are supposed to do it so that we cover our beauty from people except our husbands, father, brother etc...
And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their zeenah (charms, or beauty and ornaments) except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their khimar (veils) over their bosoms and not display their zeenah except to their husbands, their fathers .... and that they should not strike their feet so as to draw attention to their hidden zeenah (ornaments). (24:31-32)
O Prophet! Tell your wives and daughters and the believing women that they should draw over themselves their jilbab (outer garments) (when in public); this will be more conducive to their being recognized (as decent women) and not harassed. But God is indeed oft-forgiving, most merciful. (33:59)
