Punt.
No, I quit for over two years once. It was basically cold turkey, with some crutches allowed. I couldn't have another cigarette, but if I was really going nuts, a cigar or chewing tobacco would be all right (and I guess nicotine gum could work too). I'm not going to make a habit of smoking cigars--they take too long and are either too expensive or too terrible, and chew is just not a good option for in public (but great for a long drive home in traffic).
Before I decided 'no more' I had attempted various cutting back methods, but couldn't get below half a pack a day three days in a row. But I had been trying. I don't think you can wean yourself all the way off--you just have to quit. (Also, the longer you wait to have your first cigarette of the day, the less frequent the rest of your smokes will probably be.)
I just kept saying I wouldn't have any more. Twice I failed, and just said it again. After the two failures, I quit cigarettes and stayed smoke free for two years. Then I had a bad weekend, bought a pack to get me through, and have been smoking again since. Good luck, its a constant battle.

Place a package of cigarettes on a golf tee, step back, loosen your hip and blast that sucker down to the far end of the field.
All kidding aside -- there is no way to quit smoking other than cold turkey. You're kidding yourself if you think you're just going to cut back to a few day, because that old nicotine fiend is going to kick in and before you know it you're back up to the pack a day or two pack a day habit that you were trying to escape.
There are patches you can wear that help reduce cravings, but the best way is to simply tell yourself you aren't going to smoke for one hour. At the end of the hour, congratulate yourself, and try for another hour. Reward yourself -- chew gum, chomp on celery sticks, get a pomegranate and eat it, one seed at a time. The secret here is to keep your mouth and your hands busy, without gobbling up tons of calories at the same time.
Take up a hobby that is going to keep your hands busy -- learn to whittle, to knit, to crochet (and don't laugh, you'd be surprised how many men can knit and crochet) take up painting, learn to play an instrument. Anything that's going to keep your hands occupied and keep your brain busy.
The first couple of the days are the hardest, but once you get through them, you've proven to yourself that you can do it.
Good luck.

Sorry, the best way IS cold turkey. When you really want to quit you can do it. I did it, but only when I decided I really wanted to. When there's a will there's a way. Just a fact for you, the more intelligent a person is, the more likely they can quit smoking.

A certain amount of cigerette a day to start and wean yourself off.If you normally smoke a pk n a half cut it right to 1 pk.spread them out to a certain amount per hour.Like 1 an hour use chewing gum and find something to do with your hands to keep u busy.Stick to that for a week. Then the next week take 3 or 4 cigerettes away or even 5 and make it 20 cigs a day for a week n then keep lowering the amount. If you find it to fast for you do it every 2 wks.Good Luck n I hope it works.

cold turkey really is the best way whether you want to accept it or not but if you're really stubborn you can always waste your money on one of the thousands of nicotine substitutes. Find something to occupy your time. The addictive part of smoking really is just an oral fixation.
