The Army is primarily responsibilite for land-based military operations.

The Marine Corps is responsible for providing power projection from the sea, utilizing the mobility of the U.S. Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces to global crise.

The Navy is responsible for conducting naval operations.

The Air Force is the aerospace branch of the military

The Coast Guard is involved in maritime law enforcement, mariner assistance, search and rescue, and national defense, among other duties of coast guards elsewhere.

Each branch has a mission and an area of expertise. That is what in current history led to the forming of the Air Force. At times it seems to be a waste of funding and assets but to have an Army bean counter not understanding what funding goes into a sub could lead to a disaster. When taking on a mission, the Pentagon determines how to approach a battle. The problem comes in when glory seeking Generals don't request help from other assets or use the incorrect assets.

The original intention was that the Marine Corps would be the infantry arm of the Navy, but as times have changed, so has the mission. The Marines are still closely tied to the Navy, and are, in fact, actually a part of the Department of the Navy.

The mission of the Marines are to be a first strike unit. The basic deployed Marine unit, the Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU, pronounced mew), is a reinforced infantry battalion. In addition to three rifle company, a heavy weapons company (mortars, heavy machine guns) and the headquarters platoon, there will be a light armored reconnasaince platoon (4-6 LAV-25 infantry fighting vehicles plus some Humvee's), an armored platoon consisting of four M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks (MBT), a battery of artillary (6 M198 155mm towed howitzers and their associated support [crew, trucks, ammunition trailers]), an air defence platoon, consisting of Avenger air defence systems (ADS)(the avenger is a Humvee with a stinger launcher mounted on the back), as well as hand held stinger missles.

Additionally, there will be a support battalion, consisting of vehicle maintenance, transport, armorers, etc. There will also be a reinforced medium lift helicoptor squadron (HMM). This squadron will consist of 12 CH-46 Sea Knight medium lift helicoptors, 12 AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters, 4 CH-53E Super Stallion heavy lift helicopters, and four AV-8B Harrier V/STOL attack aircraft.

That is a pretty heavy punch for a battalion, and it is intended to sustain itself in combat operations (with Naval support) for 30 days without resupply. Anytime that you hear about trouble in Africa (for instance, but a safe bet), the MEU will be motoring around somewhere, and they will be airlifted to the embassy to defend the compound, as well as provide airlift evacuation if things get to hot on the ground.

The Army is the heavy hitter of the armed forces. They are intended to be on scene indefinitely (with proper logistical support), but while a US Army division has a great deal more heavy equipment than a US Marine division, it takes them much longer for them to gear up.

because they have different missions, like the marines are mostly used for amphibous landings but recently they have been used more on land, the army is more of a police force and mostly infrantry, the air force is used for strikews and controlling the air space, the navy is about the same except for its on sea.
