sometmes in the evening I feel my ears, often my left ear is hot and the right is cool. When I look in the mirror they are both the same colour, I always expect my left ear to be bright red but it isnt.

Blood Flow is gravity dependent, surface blood flow will change from time to time, as surface blood flow increases to a local area, you liberate heat, this makes that area feel warm, this is more common when you are lying down ON your side, the ear on the side you are lying on has a little bit more surface blood flow than the higher ear.
