I have decided to choose from either of these breeds of dogs. I would like some feedback on actualy owners or breeders with knowledge of either kind. The three main traits I am weighing out,in order of importance are, Loyalty- Good With Children- Obediance. I am single, have a house with a yard, and will be leaving the military to attend college. I will have plenty of freetime to train and play with the dog. I am looking for a loyal companion that I can take with me when I go out. Thank you for your time in responding. If you have any other suggestions please feel free to comment. Thank you.

It is Canis Pather. It is a breed whose MAIN purpose is protection. You are also asking for trouble since the dog looks like a pit and will be called one. Homeowners insurance can be a problem. It is a dog that would need a LOT of training and is probably not a breed for a novice.
Ridgebacks are also geared more towards the experienced dog owner. They need a lot fo exercise and they like to RUN. Can also be protective.
I guess go and meet some breeders and learn the traits of each breed FIRST.
Attending college and owning a puppy do not always go along well. College takes a lot of time and you may not have as much time as you think to devote to a new dog.

I have a suggestion for you to consider, the socialization of the dog will determine the temperment there are breed traits which is usally due to socalization history with the breed not individuals, so you could make the desition based upon breed generalizations or you can read up on proper socialization and care and treatment of your dog, and get what ever breed you want. thouhg because I know little about Canus Panther as a breed and my knowlege does suggest that it is the same breed as the Rodesian Ridgeback. Which has been call the african lion dog. I think you have already decided on the breed you want. Though I could not possible know all the breeds that have been developed over the years and registered by the many of registries in the world.

well I had never herd of the canis Panther till your question. by the google its a rare/developing breed or a mutt depending on how much validity the breed orginazation has. SO first thing if you every want to do any thing with your dog the Ridgbeack has comfomation shows, obedience, all agility venues, lure courisng, flyball all open to it. The panther would have some agility venues & flyball but litttle to nothing else. Depending on local ordineces you may run ito a pitbull problem with the panther (they look pitbullish & staffishier terrier is in the breed mix) certainly people are gonna cross the street.....

with either dog if your a novice owner DO go to a basic obedience class....

Check out these websites. Personally, I would get a German Shepherd. A well bred one health checked and from a reputable breeder. Also, have a health guarantee on ANY dog you buy.
I have owned several GSD and never had a problem with any of them. They are very family oriented, train well, smart, will guard their family and property. Raised with kids, they are great. As with any breed the children have to be taught what they can and can't do.
Good Luck

Get a mutt at the animal shelter. They always make better dogs and really need a better life. Buying a purebred is just a waste of money and an exercise in vanity.
