I was recently a witness to a shooting, and therefore made a statement for the local sheriffs' department. I'm married with a child and have been contemplating purchasing a handgun for my home. If that were to happen I would l research what it would take to secure the firearm.

Anyways, I just wanted to know what police officers generally feel about handgun ownership, whether it be that more guns=more risk to those fighting crime, or that criminals will be armed so law-abiding citizens should at least have something in their home in case it is needed.

I'm a police officer, and I am all for law-abiding citizens owning guns, on one condition: If you're gonna have a gun, learn how to use it. If you don't learn how to use your gun, don't practice with it regularly, don't keep it clean and operational, then it will be more of a danger than a protection.

Any person who is considering gun ownership should take a firearms safety course, which are offered by many different organizations, including many police departments. It's also important to practice with a firearm regularly, because, as with any other skill, if you don't use it, you lose it. Having a gun does no good if you can't hit what you're aiming at. Equally important is proper care and maintenance of the gun, which really just comes down to periodic cleaning and oiling. And of course, if you're going to have a gun, just make sure you follow all the local guidelines to ensure that you have all the necessary permits.

If a law-abiding citizen learns gun safety, practices with their gun, and keeps it in good working order, than I have absolutely no problem at all with them having a gun. In fact, I've seen more than one life saved because the "victim" had a gun and knew how to use it.

National organizations like the FOP generally express a bias towards more gun control. Rank and file officers in most departments are aware of their shortcomings as far as response time and while they might not come out and recommend gun ownership to you will admit that it saves some lives. Response time in my city for a call out to "shots fired" is 6 minutes. Lots of people can die in 6 minutes if they are defenseless.

Most police officers are pro gun, and support the 2nd Ammendment, but you also have the liberal Chas. Shumer types, who doesn't think guns should be in the hand of citizens. Fortunately, their numbers are very few.

I don't think police have a problem with legally registered firearms. The problem is that so many of them are not safely secured. If I had a firearm I would want the right to carry it on my person.

The police, like any government agency, is against ownership of guns by citizens....makes us easier to "handle".
