First thing, do not go to a barber. Go to a stylish salon where the stylists keep up with the latest trends. Take lots of pictures with you. You and the stylist should go over your hair texture , face shape, the degree of maintenance of the haircut , etc.
Then, both you and the stylist should agree on the best style for you.

Find a picture of someone with a hair style you like. Take the pic to the barbers with you and let them take it from there!

rather than telling them 'emo' tell them how you want it. or bring in a picture of someone with the hairsytle you want, and im sure they can cut it like theirs
