I see a variety of answers.....Won't light the gas, but fumes will blow. Hmmm...is it a good idea to smoke while filling your gas tank? No!
Why? Because it could (and probably would) ignite the fumes at the opening to the gas tank, where you put the gas. Based on that, the answer is YES...It will ignite and cause an explosion, not the liquid gas, but the fumes.
You cannot get that cigarette to the liquid gas, without getting past those fumes.

Yes a lit cigarette will ignite gasoline. Some of the factors to consider is the amount of gas fumes and the amount of air in the tank. If you have air (oxygen), gas fumes, and heat source it will burn.

no. it will not. the only way to get pure gas to explode is with extreme heat. basically fire. there is not enough heat in a cigarette to do this. gas fumes however are a different story. gas fumes are much much more explosive. gas fumes are put into your car engine, not pure liquid gas. however a cigarette is still not hot enough.
keep this in mind however. though it is not likely. it is still a technicall possiblility. if there are enough fumes around the cigarette it can happon. its just very unlikely. being that a galon of gas can make a very big explisotion. its best practice to put out ur cig before inhaling gas fumes...

i would say no only because your taught that in school, however my friend chris anderson was smoking when he was 14 and heard his dad coming out side. dropped his cigarette into a bucket of gas that was next to him(his brother was rebuilding a carb) and to all our suprise blew up in flames. chris paniced, knocked the bucket over and now has third degree burns from his ankle to his knee, hes 26 now and still has problems with that area. all i'm saying is, wierd **** happens

liquid gasoline will not ignite no matter what , however as has been repeated here many times , the vapour is considered explosive , a mere spark ( SPARKplug ) will do quite nicely to set off the correct air/fuel mix , please do not try this at home , or anywhere for that matter.
