Well this is an interesting point actually!
Firstly we should examine what exactly the word 'religion' means?
The dictionary would say:
1. a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
4. A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.
However, this definition contains many other words that would require a dictionary understanding so that a 'base' level of communication can be set up. That is to say that despite a 'defined' way of understanding what a word means there remains much scope for misinterpretation.
It can therefore not be possible for any two people to have the same understanding of any one word because each word involved within it's definition need further definition.
Let us assume for a moment that it were possible for every single word used in the definition of religion to itself be accurately defined and the definitions of those definitions to be accurately defined AND understood, then it could be observed that every single word conceivable must be accurately defined and understood in relation to every other conceivable word before we can even begin to answer your question.
Next we have the problem of experience or rather the situation that no two people have ever (or ever could) share exactly the same experiences. This effects how the word religion, and therefore it's definition is understood because it is only through experience that anything can be understood. If we take the word 'devotion' from the dictionary definition of 'religion' for example it will mean different things to different people. If someone who has been told by their lover that they are devoted to them, only to later discover that they were as devoted to their best friend, will understand the word differently to someone who married at 20 and has had a truly devoted partner until the present day. Different connotations of the word arise. Similarly the word religion has the denotative meaning of that of the dictionary definition (which can be misunderstood/misinterpreted) and a connotative meaning generated by individual experiences.
Hence, it is not possible to completely understand what another being is saying, at least not on an absolute level.
So, with this in mind it is not possible to say that "deep down you know that your religion is man made BS" because that would imply an understanding of what religion actually is.
Further more, each religion (like each word) is open to interpretation and therefore misinterpretation AND each person will understand what a given religion or religious doctrine is saying differently depending on personal experiences.
so FINALLY to answer your question; All religion can be thought of as "man made BS" as you put it or it could be thought of as man made expression or as a multitude of different things depending on the individuals experiences concerning their chosen religion. Exactly what 'religion' is trying to express I do not know, in fact it is presumably that know one knows or ever will know. However many have the conviction that their religion is correct or is expressing what they believe to be the essence of life or even to be life itself.
I think it is useful to ask such questions as yours because it is essentially what makes us human. If we just accept everything without asking then we are blind. That is not to say that we should not accept, quite the contrary, we should accept. Then perhaps religious driven wars would not exist to the extent that they do today. Conflict will always be there as it is inseparable from the human condition, learning how to deal with this conflict and using it constructively for the benefit of others and ourselves should be the only from questions such as yours should take. That is to say that the form given to the question by the reader should be a positive or at least constructive one.
I do not think I have directly answered what you asked. But that is because it is not possible to directly answer it, doing so would be a misinterpretation because to talk defiantly about something is to forget the other half of that something. In other words to look at one side of the proverbial coin of the question is to forget the other, equally important side. This trail of thought may be something that you happily dismiss or something that proves of some benefit, either way, continue to ask questions but without expecting a rational, definitive answer. And try to enjoy life without hurting others.
Thank you for asking a question which inspired me to write a response, if you would like to talk more (or if anyone else has other thoughts on this matter) please post a reply.
Yours,
Vince

All religions espouse moral codes, virtues and other values. When put properly into practice these are tremendous forces for good in the world... certainly not BS, even if it's all man made.

Nope...deep down YOU know that having such beliefs is pointless, and there's no point in existence if you're going to end up dying anyway, unless you believed in God and heaven and hell. I don't understand how you even try at life if you don't believe in God, coz no matter how hard you try, in the end you're gonna lose it all and dye anyway.

I agree.
The proof that religion is man-made is the fact that behind most of the wars in our world was a religious question.....doesn't this prove that most religions blindly follow their beliefs without consideration for mankind in general?
I won't even say the dreaded "M" word (Muslim).

Atheism is man-made, I agree.
PS - Just like the religious followers to pick out an error like a spelling mistake when they can't see the ridiculousness in their beliefs!
