I guess my sense of empathy has finally caught up with me. As a follow on from another topic on the vein of Satan...

Does anyone else feel sorry for the character of the Devil? I don't think what he did in the tales was the right way forward, but it seems like he's been subjected to so much hatred and been left alone to fester in his own darkness for so long that it would be tremendously injust of either God or Humanity to demand his destruction now.

Wouldn't the right thing to do be to extend a hand of forgiveness to him rather than a thrusted dagger of vindication? I know that I, for one, would not feel happy were he to be sentenced to extinction while I yet live.

If not, would Satan an exception to the "Love thine Enemies and pray for those who persecute you" rule? Could you justify that?

(And don't start with the "It's not real" stuff. It's a hypothetical ethical question whose query remains regardless of whether there is an actual devil or if it's just fiction.)

The Devil wants you to feel sorry for him, it is part of his plan, don't fall for it.

One immortals meat is anothers poison.

The reports are biased. Victors justice? Every story must have a villain, in scripture it Old Nic. Given the source of the documents did you expect anything else?

The no forgiveness paradox exposes the innate hypocrisy.

"forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us...," it's all do as I say, not do as I do with the Big Guy.

If "the quality of mercy is not strained", then why would a merciful deity not forgive His enemies?

We demand restitution.
I say Old Nic for Pope!

On the other hand. Don't think he's too bothered. He's his own boss now, and getting more popular all the time.....don't think he wants to be forgiven.

Satan is not a character, he is very real. And no, I don't feel sorry for him because (i don't know what you've heard) the real story is that Satan became power-hungry and questioned God. Satan wanted to be better than God and that attitude is not tolerated in Heaven, let alone God's prescence. Satan knew full well the consequences and yet choose to act in sin and manipulate many other angels. that's why I don't feel sorry for him.

Your argument is valid...don't let anyone tell you otherwise. However, it is missing a certain point.

The Devil, Satan, must first ask for forgiveness.

God forgives all who ask, given that they are truly sorry for their offense. The Devil's offense was rebellion. In order to be forgiven, he must bow before God and announce that God is the Lord. Then, he must ask forgiveness of God for his crimes.

THEN, and only then, would the Devil be forgiven.

Do you think the Devil will submit?

I've no sympathy for that.

However I'm reading "Paradise Lost" and I've heard it said that Satan is the more sympathetic character in that and it seems to be where a lot of our ideas about Satan come from, rather than the Bible itself.

The song is a artwork of fiction, like the movie "The recommend." purely because the concern count number is about the nature said as devil doesn't recommend they extremely count number on it. the purely ingredient they count number on is sex drugs and rock&roll which i wager some people might want to assert is Satanic.

He always had the choice to ask for forgiveness That is how it is justified. He hasn't repented for his actions feels no guilt etc so therefore should be punished i guess.

No Mick Jagger attitude here. Shake a devil's hand and you've sealed a bargain with the creature to your own soul's detriment.

We need to have someone to fear. We need to have someone to hate. The Devil (whatever or whoever that is) fits both bills in one fell swoop!
Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?

Just think, if he'd had rearranged his name slightly (ie Santa, not Satan), everyone would love him and the world would be a hellish zone of horror.
