HOW TO WRITE AN OUTLINE
An outline breaks down the parts of your thesis in a clear, hierarchical manner. Most students find that writing an outline before beginning the paper is most helpful in organizing one's thoughts. If your outline is good, your paper should be easy to write.
The basic format for an outline uses an alternating series of numbers and letters, indented accordingly, to indicate levels of importance. Here is an example of an outline on a paper about the development of Japanese theater:

OUTLINE NOTES

c. old men

2. Structure of Stage

E. Audience

IV. Kabuki

V. Bunraku (puppet) theater

HOW TO DO AN OUTLINE
An outline is a way of organizing information. It uses key words
or word groups to show main topics, subtopics, details, etc.

Sample Outline Format:

TITLE OF OUTLINE
I. Main topic
A. Important subtopic
B. Important subtopic
1. Detail
a. Sub-detail
b. Sub-detail
c. Sub-detail
2. Detail
3. Detail
a. Sub-detail
b. Sub-detail
II. Main topic
A. Important subtopic
B. Important subtopic
1. Detail
2. Detail

Helpful Hints - Follow these guidelines to complete your outline:

1. Title the outline - write the title of your paper at the top of the page.
2. Follow the sample outline format for numbering and lettering. Main ideas are chief
points. Label them I, II, III, etc. Each main topic must include at least two subtopics.
3. Subtopics for each main topic are labeled A, B, C, etc.
4. Details for subtopics are labeled 1, 2, 3, etc.
5. Subdetails or examples for details are labeled a, b, c, etc.
6. Use a period after each division letter or number. Do not place periods after topics or
subtopics not stated in the form of a sentence.
7. Begin the main topic, subtopics, and details with capital letters.
8. Maintain a parallel structure throughout the outline; if you start with phrases, don't
switch to sentences.
9. Indent as shown in the example. You should be able to draw a line through all the
periods after Roman numerals, another through all the periods after capital letters, etc.

an outline is merely a summary of what your paper is to be about.

First you must title your paper...what is the subject.

Then in order describe the subjects in the order you intend to write about them.

there fore your outline should look something like this.

Title

Introduction

Body of the subject matter, including refrences.

Discussion of the subject matter.

Conclusion.

Your paper may need a bit more on it but that is the basic outline of the paper. In your outline do not go in depth about the paper you are going to write...just generalize on what the paper is about.

Be sure when you write your paper...keep things in order.

For instance if you are discussing how to wash the dishes.

In detail you would say something like this.

Fill the sink with water and soap. This is done by turning on the tap and adding soap.

Then you would discuss washing the dishes.

Add the dishes to the sink, and using a sponge or similar item you wash all the dishes thoroughly. You then place the cleaned dishes in the other side of the sink for rinsing.

When rinsing you use cold water and rinse the dishes thoroughly by running the water over the dishes to remove all of the soap.

Then you place the dishes in the drainer to dry. Do this in an organized order so maximize space usage.

I think you should get the gist.

This is how i do it
Introduction, thesis no more than 25 words(thesis being your stand on the issue)
first paragraph
main point
suporting details
supporting details
second paragraph
main point
supporting details
supporting details
third paragraph
main point
supporting details
supporting details
Conclusion summarizes all main points does not add anything new to the paper make sure that each paragraph has only one subject with related information that supports the subject of the paragraph. of course you can have more than three paragraphs but that is the easiest way to do an outline. and outline is the most inportant part of a paper writing and also the most tedious. if you have any more questions just e-mail me

What the main point is
supporting detail

wrap up...tying to next paragraph
Second main point
supporting detail
supporting detail
wrap up...tying to next paragraph
Third main point
supporting detail
supporting detail
wrap up...tying to next paragraph
Conclusion
Tie back to introduction
restatement of thesis and what conclusion can be drawn
3 main points again
good remembered last sentence
