We drove through Spain last year and found the AA route planner really good, it really does find the best route!
However, once in Spain we found having an actual road map really helped. The roads are better than in the UK but the junction system is different and quite confusing. Also towns that the route planner named didn't necessarily come up on the road signs. That's where we found having the road map usefull.
Basically we followed the route (that the route planner gave us) but used a road map.
