Hello there,
I came to Canada from the UK in 1977 with my husband and 3 suitcases & a baby! To be honest, Toronto is a great city, but I wouldn't want to live there! (Sorry Guys) It is so easy to get lost in the crowds in a city of 5 million
Have you considered a smaller Ontario town? There are so many great cities & towns in southern Ontairo - Kitchener, Brantford, Cambridge, London, St Thomas, Windsor, they are all large enough to have great employment possibilities, yet small enough that they are still friendly places to live.
If you email me I will try to answer any questions you may have.
All the best to you and your family as you start your new life over here!
Cheers!

Lest set the record straight. Scarborough is a wonderful place, I've lived here all my life, and its fine. I've never worn a bullet proof vest, never heard a gunshot or seen a crime. Nothing gets stolen from my unlocked car, I live without fear here. Most gunshots are in the suburb called North York, especially prolific in Jane & Finch area, and mafia in north part, but people make sport of badmouthing Scarborough, especially those who don't live here or don't know it, they speak in ignorance. Its ridiculous ! Its no worse than any other part of Toronto at all. Before amalgamation with other suburbs to become a "megacity" Toronto, Scarborough set the highest standards for education and building code requirements. The schools and teachers are wonderful too, just as good and even better than many others in Toronto. There is outstanding shopping, great restaurants, and super movie theatres infinitely better than North York has, plus free parking, unlike North York where you have to pay to park your car to watch a movie. Scarborough has several marinas and a waterfront park with outstanding cycling paths, and amazing view of the park and the lake from above the cliff. Also, Scarborough has the world-class Toronto Zoo !

I grew up in Etobicoke which is a part of Toronto. It is not right downtown but very close to it. I never had to worry about guns, knives and violence, like I'm sure some schools downtown do. There are good and bad neighbourhoods throughout the GTA. Take a look around your surroundings when searching for a home and school. Also keep in mind Brampton and Mississauga are a hop, skip and a jump away as well. Mississauga has beautiful homes and great schools. I would definately say avoid the Jane and Finch area. It is very violent. Please give special consideration to the high school as violence escalades in high school. It's hard enough for kids who grew up in Toronto. Tour the schools first and talk with the principal and teachers.

Hi.

Toronto is a complex city. There are all types of neighbourhoods - different enthnicity, different economics. It all depends what you want.

For public schools, you can choose between the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Toronto District Catholic School Board. The TDSB has an excellent website (www.tdsb.on.ca) that will provide you with information about the various schools and help you determine which school your child might attend depending on your address. Be very careful about that. In some areas, Willowdale for example, the schools are at maximum enrolment and you should confirm that the address you are going to live at qualifies your child to attend that school. The website provides you with phone numbers for the schools. (Real estate agents don't always have accurate information about particular schools so if schools are critical to your decision, check with the schools themselves before signing anything.)

Another consideration is public transit. The subways run along Yonge/University and Bloor Street. You can check with the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) for more information (http://www.toronto.ca/ttc/). Rush hour in Toronto is almost 24/7 so if you don't like to sit in traffic, you might want to situate yourself close to good bus and subway routes.

Is your 16-year old going to attend local universities? University of Toronto and Ryerson University are both downtown. York University is at the north end of the city at Keele and Steeles.

Good luck with your scouting.

Welcome to Toronto!! You will really like it here. I can suggest an area called North York. There are plenty of good schools in the area. Right on York Mills Ave. there are two schools right beside each other and one of them is a French Emerson school, if your interested. We also have Catholic schools that are free!! All children wear uniforms!! Lots of decision's for you but u will be pleased with our systems we have for our children!!

Good Luck and enjoy our city!!

You might want to check out Barrie Ont. (it's just north of Toronto) still close enough to commute but removed enough to be out of the Big City. Lot's of great schools too!

Happy moving!

it's true what's been written about Scarborough... (not so nice)
also true about North York (nice)
in the Yonge/Sheppard area, there's a good elementary school (McKee Public School) and excellent high school (Earl Haig Secondary)

also Thornhill and Markham (just north of TO, and just northeast of TO respectively) have many good schools...

best wishes from a lifetime Torontonian!

You didn't say anything about your budget but the two best areas are Rosedale and Forest Hill.
