If you've never seen The Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel, you should! This guy just amazes me time and time again. Who else thinks he's wonderful and why?

Msg to Stalkers - I find it ridiculous that the AHS has the nerve to concern itself with Cesar Milan's techniques that have saved the lives of thousands of dogs that would have otherwise been destroyed in shelters. Obviously you haven't watched the show. His methods are common sense techniques that focus on a dog's natural desire to live in a stable pack with a confident & balanced leader. There is nothing abusive or unnatural about it. If you watched his show regularly you will see how he does shower his dogs with love & positive reinforcement. The only negative reinforcement he exhibits is exactly the same behavior that a pack leader would exhibit in nature. In the wild, an unruly wolf in a pack would be disciplined quite harshly by the alpha wolf. And if that wolf failed to get in line, he would be outsted by the pack & left to fend for himself w/o the teamwork & protection of the pack. Most likely, that lone wolf would die. Cesar's way isn't anywhere near that harsh!

Msg to Stalker - CESAR MILAN IS NOT A DOG TRAINER! HE'S A DOG REHABILITATOR! THERE'S A DIFFERENCE. And I did read your articles and I don't agree. He does not teach you how to train a normal dog. He rehabilitates dogs with problems. Some of them quite severe where the dog would otherwise end up on death row. As for lawsuits...everybody in this country thinks somebody is to blame for anything that goes wrong in their lives! Guess what, America is a ridiculously litigious society and many lawsuits have no merit whatsoever, but it's so ridiculously expensive to defend yourself, people end up settling. That does not indicate guilt or wrong-doing. This country is in dire need of litigation reform. But that's another topic for another day. Let the AHS & ASPCA must not care about the number of dogs that get put to death that people like Cesar could otherwise rehabilitate.

As a trainer- he's not any better than any other trainer that has ever been. He just has enough guts to tell stupid pet owners like it really is. Some of his methods are illogical and dangerous. Like at his training camp where one of the guys that works for him (that's not a dog trainer) was using a choke collar on a treadmill and that dog almost hung himself to death. A real trainer that ran a camp would do all the training himself/herself. Away from the actual training methods- I disagree a lot with his perceptions of how dogs and humans should interact (I won't get into all that here).

Stalker's right. Follow the links- and ask your vet about Cesar Milan. I worked for a veterinarian who actually gave out warnings about listening to him as doing so can cause harm to your dog.

DOGS ARE NOT WOLVES. They are *descended* from wolves, yes, and *some* of the same behaviors *may* apply. Are YOU an alpha wolf? No. In no way are you an alpha wolf, nor is your dog an omega wolf, and your family is not a pack. It is NOT the same thing and the same principles do NOT apply. There are hundreds of years of evolution between a wolf and the dog curled up in your home.

Yes, accidents do happen to everyone. Accidents don't usually involve a dog frothing blood and *being ignored* unless the person responsible does not care.

I've heard Milan referred to as an animal behaviorist; not here, but elsewhere. This is a false claim- you must have extensive training and be registered to claim that title.

He's not amazing. He's charismatic. Charisma does not make him any more of an expert, nor does it make up for injury caused by following his suggestions- you should *never* yank a dog's leash hard enough to lift its paws, nor should you be practicing the 'alpha roll.' The alpha roll is dangerous to the owner.

Again- dogs are NOT wolves.

Stalker's suitable. persist with the links- and ask your vet approximately Cesar Milan. I labored for a veterinarian who certainly gave out warnings approximately listening to him as doing so could reason harm on your dogs. dogs are actually not WOLVES. they're *descended* from wolves, confident, and *some* of the comparable behaviors *could* persist with. Are YOU an alpha wolf? No. on no account are you an alpha wolf, neither is your dogs an omega wolf, and your loved ones isn't a %.. it isn't the comparable concern and the comparable ideas do not persist with. There are hundreds of years of evolution between a wolf and the dogs curled up on your place. confident, injuries do ensue to every physique. injuries do not usually contain a dogs frothing blood and *being disregarded* till the guy in charge does not care. i've got heard Milan spoke of as an animal behaviorist; not here, yet someplace else. this could nicely be a pretend declare- you may have huge preparation and be registered to declare that identify. he isn't astounding. he's charismatic. aura does not make him to any extent further of an expert, nor does it make up for harm brought about by making use of following his techniques- you may *on no account* yank a dogs's leash not undemanding sufficient to advance its paws, nor must you be training the 'alpha roll.' The alpha roll is risky to the owner. lower back- dogs are actually not wolves.

Well, I don't know about "amazing"! There are trainers who use the same types of methods all over the country, they just don't have a tv show. I am happy there is such a show on tv, not only so that people will realize there is hope for their dog, but also to show an alternative to the beg and bribe methods.

Stalkers - Accidents can happen to ANYONE, especially when you are working with problem animals. Of course the ARs don't like him, they are the beg and bribe, never say no, furbaby crowd. Have you EVER seen a canine pack leader bribe a pack member! NO! And the dog will never see you as leader unless you earn his RESPECT! Something you will not obtain as long as you continue to beg/bribe for behavior. That said, there are certainly 'soft' dogs that work best for treats/praise, but there is NO one size fits all training methods, they are individuals! The beg/bribe crowd do not believe in ANY other methods and are doing a great diservice to the pet owning public with their narrow minded thinking.

Stalker - AHA and ASPCA are, at BEST, ARlite. And yes, ANY trainer who has taught for 25 years SHOULD know this!

There IS a happy medium between beating/choking (your words, I do not have to beat or choke) and never-say-no-bribe-with-a-treat. Unfortunately, the furbaby trainers don't think there is any other methods, as do some of the old time force only trainers. You are a perfect example of this, obviously you believe there is only ONE method. BOTH methods can be appropriate, depending on the individual dog!

Sounds like you need to spend some time working with problem dogs instead of spending it on the AR websites!

"everybody in this country thinks somebody is to blame for anything that goes wrong in their lives!"

Isn't that the truth!!! No more 'live and learn' HERE! We just legislate everything that could possibly go wrong to protect people from their own bad decisions.

"the AHS & ASPCA must not care about the number of dogs that get put to death"

So it seems. ARlite, to be sure.

Saiyoko - That is true, dogs are not wolves, but they ARE pack animals and they live as such, given the chance. Why would you think most Vets know anything about behavior? Most have little knowledge about behavior, that is why they send their problem dogs to ME! LOL! Getting information about behavior from your Vet is like having the cashier at Petco spay your dog!

I think he's an abusive prick. And, I'm not the only one. Many vets and animal groups agree, including the ASPCA and the American Humane Association. And, he's being sued for killing a dog by choking it to death and overworking it. And then when the dog started bleeding from it's mouth, he did nothing. Read up on your idols before you put much stock into them.

And for all you 'fans' who are going to thumbs down me, try reading the articles I link to. They aren't fake articles, but articles by nationally recognized groups and from papers like USA today. Blindly voting 'thumbs down' simply because you like him is ignorant.

Msg to Alleycat: Actually I *have* watched the show and I had to turn it off because I was so disgusted. This was *before* I knew anything about the man or his techniques. He's a prick who is selling abuse under the guise of training. If you are too blind to see that and won't bother to read the articles I've posted, then go ahead and keep suppporting the man as an ignoramous. Most dog trainers I know don't have lawsuits against them for animal abuse. Would you send your child to a daycare that had abuse allegations? Why would your dog be any different? It's obvious that you aren't that educated on pets or animals, and haven't bothered to read a damn thing I posted, as you don't even know that it's the AHA, not the AHS (whatever that is) that has spoken out against him. But hey, they AND the ASPCA must be wrong, since *you* disagree.

mj - Umm Hmmm. Sorry that not everyone believes that choking and beating dogs is the way to love them. But again, since you agree with him, then the ASPCA and the AHA must be wrong. And these are not "Animal Rights" societies, and a trainer for the last 25 years should know this. Every animal deserves humane treatment and to be protected from cruelty. Any dog trainer who hates the ASPCA and the AHA and what they stand for is not one whose opinion I would take very seriously.

I have never owned a dog and at my age I never will. I love Cesar's show and watch it all the time. I cannot believe how people can go so many years with a dog and put up with some of the behaviors they do from their pets. He gets to the problem and solves it so effectively!

I have caught some shows of Super Nanny and feel the same way. How could people possibly live with those awful children!

I wish he could train me to be "pack leader" with my six cats!

I find myself addicted to it. Whenever Im flipping thru the channels and happpen upon it, I can't help but watch it. Ive spent an entire Saturday afetrnoon watching that show. His manner with dogs is amazing, but what I think is most amazing is that this is a guy who snuck across the American border in the middle of the night with nothing but napsack of food and clothing. Look at him today, his own TV show, fame and Im sure making money hand over fist. God bless America.

Cesar is one of a kind. Caring, concerned for the animals and a wizard when it comes to dogs. He never ceases to amaze me. I have his book and 2 of his DVDs. He is right on with his dealings with the animals in that the owners need the training to be a pack leader and not the dog.
HE IS AWESOME !!!!!!

I have the utmost admiration for the man.
It truly is amazing that one guy with no formal education in this field can make people not only pay attention and listen to what he has to say but make people apply what he's told them to their dogs.Dogs that until this guy came along spent their lives un-noticed in a kennel or on a chain out back where no one had to deal with them.
It truly is awesome!
I don't approve of some of his methods.Dogs do not belong on treadmills. And especially left on one unattended for evan a minute.
I believe Milan has several lawsuits against him now for his training methods and the National Humane Society is trying to get his show pulled off the air BECAUSE of his methods.

I don't even have a dog and I love watching his show. It's absolutely amazing how he shows "owners" what they are doing wrong. The results are something else.

On a funny note: My niece and my sister were were walking their dog one day, when a couple of dogs started heading towards them. My niece looked at them and said "SSHHT" and pointed at them and they stopped and went the other way. My sister asked her how she knew to do that and she said proudly, "I watch the Dog Whisperer!"

My daughter says I have to get a dog now, to practice what I've learned. :-)
