I think you get really mad about unfathomably inane things. I would have thought a nine year student of karate would have better mental discipline than that... or did you learn your karate from a book?

people do that just to show off and act cool in front of other people dude, they can't help it that their stupidity gets the better of them and they show everybody else just how foolish they really look by saying (or doing somethin' ) stupid.

case in point, I was working on some techniques with a Bo staff outside not long ago, and a bunch of high school students were walking by after The homecoming parade. I heard the same kinda remarks, "oh you in Karate?", I don't get mad at em, I actually pity them, because they're clueless.

and like yupchagee said, they don't know anything about it so they gotta mock or make a total jackass out of themselves just to look cool or act funny to impress whoever's watchin them.

so y'know what I said back? "classes are Mondays Wednsdays and Fridays 7:30pm to 9:00pm". Did I expect them to come up there to check out the class? Nah, not in the least, because I figured they'd be too worried about impressing their little friends just so they could have more brown to shine their noses with.

and as spidertiger said, advertising that you're studying a Martial Art, no matter what discipline it is will often garner some remarks like that just so the person doing or saying it can feel better about themselves and reassured that their buddies will think their cool.

So don't sweat it man, just do your thing, and be proud of it; but don't worry about some knuckle head that's actin the fool.

I always laugh and think "That's the best impersonation of a Jackass if I've ever seen one" and it only gets even funnier the more I see it, especially when they wind up bustin' their a-- on the ground tryin' to mimic the movements, and that's what I really think is funny.

i know how u feel. i used to get mad about that too. I was in Kajukenbo for 6 years and i am a purple belt. When i told ppl they'd do stupid stuff and make weird noises thinking it's funny. I'm sorry, but karate and martial arts are serious things. It's not some joke. It is an art form and a special form of self defense and it is very impressive to be trained in any field of martial arts. I still do sorta hate when ppl make fun of it, but let them try to fight one of us and see what happens, eh?!! lol.. don't let those haters get u down, though. As martial artists we learn self discipline and self respect and are expected to practice this on and off the dojo, so... be careful with ur anger at these idiots and just remember how much better than them u r. If it helps, imagine in ur mind kicking them in the face with a jumping roundhouse!! lol! have a great day!!

its because they have no idea what its really about. Respect, honor, and hard work. the people that do that stuff wouldn't last a second in the ring with any true martial artist. My entire dojo was in the city parade (we took first) and as we were doing karate kids were doing this same thing and me and a Friend (we are both big guys) we would throw fakes at them sooo close to their face that it would make them jump and then they looked like the stupid ones for making fun of us but being afraid at the same time.

True Karate students taught well would not get upset, nor would they be verbally combative. Yes alot of people are just dumb, they do not know the Tenants of martial Arts, heck they may not even know the 10 commandments, haa, Karate develops within, not just physical ability, learn to ignore the remarks, be polite, show self discipline, use your indomitable spirit, show courtesy and try to educate them.
Remember, you are an embassador for your school.

what do u care what they think, dont tell them u study karatee, the octagon exposed lots of myths about the arts so the respect level is down, I was at a boxing gym when 5 tkd black belts came to the gym and all but 2 got knocked out, that did not make me respect them any less, they just needed to change their game sum

primarily you should not advertise that you train in a martial art and this whole situation could be avoided. Never discuss rank with others. This will steer you away from ego situations.
Keep your training secret.
For those that know and choose to mock, all they are doing is saying words, it is not worth getting upset over.

well, i get the same response when i teel people about my
6 years of lung shou pai. i overcame this problem by further educating my classmates on what martial arts are really about.
and at times i teach a 2$ class to help people get what i'm talking about.
