Tell your grandson not to stare at the dog, it will be interpreted as aggression. Let the dog come to him, rather than go towards the dog. No sudden movements, no loud voices and basically keep things pretty laid-back. A dog who feels surprised or threatened is more likely to snap in self-defense.

You might also consider buying some doggy treats and letting your grandson feed them to the dog, but check with your daughter first - some dogs have sensitive stomachs or allergies, and you certainly wouldn't want the dog associating your grandson with getting sick!
