The Catholic Church believes that "Only God forgives sin."

When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.

Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ.

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (Confession) with a priest ordained in the name Jesus Christ not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.

The Catholic belief is that you confess your sins to your priest. He is there in the place of both God, and the community. Any sin is a sin against both God and the community. Back in the middle ages, part of any penance involved one of confessing to the community, much like the scarlet letter (public declaration of your sin against the community). There were generally outward signs such as hair shirts etc. that would cause minor discomfort, but also public shame for ones sins.

The priest holds power in the Catholic church for forgiveness of sins, or to hold them bound (John 20:23 I believe is an example of this). The priest also represents the community. Although what is said in the confessional is between the sinner and God alone, a condition of forgiveness may involve turning oneself in to the authorities.

Ultimately, you must have a contrite heart and vow to God to not only sin again, but to avoid the circumstances (the near occassion) that lead to your sin.

You confess your sins to a priest and the priest forgives or does not forgive you of them. When Jesus did that, they called it blasphemy but He was God. Catholics claim the power to forgive sin, to not make any mistakes in the edicts of the church, the pope is God on Earth, (on his sceptor and crown he wears is the words Vicarius Filii Dei or Vicker of God, takes the place of God in simple terms), is the only universal church, has the authority to change times and laws of God, namely the ten commandments, can order saints to Heaven or bind them in Hell, can make laws and precepts that are against the bible, they are to take tradition over the bible. they plainly state they are the ones that changed Gods law that says you shoudl worship on the Seventh day, the day God said to worship on, to the first day of the week, the venerable day of the sun, a pagan holiday. they also claim the Pope can tell God what to do and He will do it as instructed by the Pope. If you look at the history of the church and the bible you will find the Catholic church or papacy in the biblical prophecies of Daniel and Revelation as well as the United States. If you want more info, check out the site below and do the studies and it will go through a lot of what I have told you here. Also check out your history and compare it with the biblical prophecies and concepts to see what is right and wrong about anything it teaches. Do that with any church you want to check into.

Hi, I am a Catholic and yes I do go somewhere to confess my sins from time to time, it is called the cofessional box.
a Catholic Priest will hear my confession and as I am truly sorry for my sins He will give me absolution through the ministry of the church.
Jesus said to Peter, whoever sins you shall forgive they are forgiven,but those sins that you retain are retained, the early Christians confessed thier sins to the Apostles and later to those appointed by them and as Peter was the first Pope so the authority has come down through the sucessive Popes and Bishops to this day.
now this power to forgive sin is not given to us laymen in the same way only those who are ordained .
now to those who would say this is wrong thenI refer them to Christ`s own words, and He never said anything that was untrue, and No the church has not interpreted it wrong either.
when we have sinned we feel the burden of guilt that sin deposits upon our souls and conscience and we need to repent to lift these burdens, some faiths just say sorry to God and thats fine but in confession you know that you are forgiven by the healing power of the sacrament, and the burden is gone.
also in confession through the power of the church we recieve sanctifying grace and it is this special grace that makes this a sacrament, this is the cleansing power of the blood of Christ and allows the penitent to be reconnected to God, because serious sin takes us away from God`s friendship.
I like to think of confession as a sauna for the soul.

Below is the Nicene Creed, the statement of Roman Catholic belief.

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, light from light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

There are also seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, Ordination, Confession, Eucharist, and Holy Unction (last rites), all of which involve interaction with the clergy, whom I guess are of somewhat higher rank. However, even the pope confessions to a common priest.

Not all catholics confess to priests (they don't need to be high ranking). Catholics are Christians too and we were the first christian religon to acknowledge Jesus as the son of god in the Roman Empire. If you listen to many ignorants or anti-catholics they have you believe that they worship Mary and are a cult. We are not, most of our practices I can find it the holy bible. In the bible Jesus said to his prophets when they were about to drink wine "drink this is my blood". Hence, why at church we drink wine as a symbol for accepting Christ and we eat the wafer because it represents the body of christ. We don't worship Mary, we respect her because she is the mother of our savior. There is also another myth that catholics don't eat meat on fridays. Wrong. We eat meat on Fridays except for GOOD FRIDAY when Jesus was killed.

Yes, there is a place to go and tell all your sins to . Problem is, not very many actually do this. As a matter of fact, confession is one of the sacraments that few actually do.

We only wish that the priests these days would tell their sins too. Seems they are getting away with pedaphilia and sexual abuse way too much and nobody does anything about it.

No wonder we don't go to coffession that often.

If you are interested in the Catholic faith then I recommend that you also check out Orthodox. Orthodox was the first church and Catholic churches came from it. We do confession to God and the priest is a witness.

Catholics believe almost like any protestant's except that they have a priest (unmarried) and Nun's that get none, to help the common catholic get their prayers answered. One Army Catholic priest told me that perhaps since he was closer to God , he could get a prayer through where others could not. Like you, I accept most denominations but not any who do not believe that Jesus is God's only begotten Son.
