I made my own Christmas ornaments from dough. I used the recipe from

http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/holiday/xmasdough2.shtml

I got some cookie cutters from the dollar store that were not open topped but had a top that made an all over design on the dough. (don't forget to make a hole for hanging)

After baking the dough (looks like porcelain when its done) I painted them with dollar store craft paint and dipped them in a clear coat of varnish and hung them to dry. They turned out really nicely and were cheap to make . . .

You could cut branches from pine trees or spruce , or any trees that look like you could use as a christmas tree and make garland for the mantle on your fireplace. Just make sure that they are free from bugs and things. Then add a string of lights if you have extras that you won't be using for the tree. Add pine cones if you have any on the ground. You could start collecting them now before christmas starts so that you don't have to hunt for them later. I hope you live in an area that they are found easily. You could also use any extra ornaments that you don't put on the tree, and put them in bowls on tables. You can also put lights around windows and doors. You can take old christmas cards and string them together as garland to. You could put wrapping paper on all the doors around the house if you have any left over from last year. You can also wrap the frames that hang on the walls to make them look like presents. You can also look up ideas on line the Christmas on a budget. I know that you will come up with great ideas and will have fun doing it.

My favourite thing to do is to alternate coloured candles on the fireplace mantle (red & green or blue & silver). These can be found at the dollar store as well as the candle holders. Turn the lights down low, or off, turn on your Christmas tree lights, put some Christmas music on the stereo, put your feet up and relax. If your pets like the Christmas tree too much, try some bitter apple spray around the bottom branches and on the floor.
