he isn't ready yet. walmartshopper was right on with her answer. you as the mother know that your 4 year old boy is still a baby and needs diapers. you probably have been receiving flack from other parents who prudeishly feel they know better than you. stop potty training him. i've heard from pediatricians that 3-5 years is the norm for a child to be ready. i have two personal friends who took their daughters out of diapers at 5. there was nothing wrong with that. that's what those girls needed. your son will only be little once. enjoy this time while you have it. it will be over way too soon.

I had the same problem. I tried to do potty training several times but to no avail, it just wasnt working. After trying for over two years i finally decided he would let me know when he was ready. the best thing to do is let him go into the bathroom with you when you go and let him know you are going potty. And if dad or a father/male figure is in the house have him do the same thing. my now 5yr old would never use the potty chair. I bought one of those seats that make the big potty smaller. (hope that makes sense) Do that for a while and see if you get him showing any interest. Also since he is old enough to understand try just askig him every hour to hour anda half if he needs to go potty.
I did all of these tactics and other i cant remember. ANd finally one morning he came to me and said "underwear". After that is was semi-smooth sailing. There are obviously going to be some bumps in the road, but once he decides he wants to participate it makes it a lot easier.
Remember to continue asking him if he needs to go potty on a regular basis. If you have anymore questions feel free to email me anytime.

I was very frustrated as well with potty training. When I was researching potty training a common theme seemed to be praise and positive reinforcement. I came across a website called www.pottytrainingrewards.com. We hung it in the kitchen and named the little boy on the front of the package, “Bobby”. My son could not wait to go to the potty so he could push the button, hear the praising message, and get his chocolate reward from, “Bobby”. It really got my son excited about using the potty himself and it was fun for him. Because he became so involved, potty training was easy. So give it a try.

all kids go on the potty at their own rate, he probably is a little afraid, you will get all kinds of answers on here about him being 4 and should already be trained, my son was a little over 4 when he finally got the hang of it. I had asked his doctor this very same question, I was told "I dont know why we call it potty training because we dont train them they have to be ready to go on their own" the more you push the issue the less they are ready, get a book on potty training and read it with him and when he does go make sure you make a big issue out of that, they love to be praised, at 4 once they are doing it on their own they hardly ever have accidents unlike children who are younger and forced to go before they are ready good luck

Oh expensive, that is a difficult one. I even have a developmentally -not on time 4yo who is potentially at the prime-functioning finish of the autism spectrum. He's simply opening to potty educate now. For us, it has particularly been a question of figuring out our baby's limits. My son's been awesome with scheduled wake-up/bedtime "potty calls", and surely HAS to determine out the toilet at any time when we are out jogging errands, however he tends to hyper-consciousness on hobbies, and as a rule does not get to the toilet till it is too overdue. So I watch him like a hawk. Like close to the whole thing with an "recognized" baby, it is a task. But be regular, sufferer and style, certainly while you suppose your blood strain emerging after the fiftieth twist of fate. He'll get there.

First of all... you have waited way too long to try and potty trian. For God's Sake... he is 4 years old! My daughters were completely potty trained by 15 months.... As soon as a child can go all night with out peeing ... when their diaper is dry in the morning... it is time to start potty training. This is your fault... not his.... the only thing I say is Good Luck!

Have you explained to him that he's supposed to pee/poop? He doesnt quite understand why you're putting him on the potty. Do you have a potty thats just for him? If not, get one. At 4 years old, he should be using the potty so my advice Is to explain It to him so he'll understand. Keep at It until he does understand.

Try this - put him on the adult toilet, but put him on backwards, in other words, facing the tank. Put some books up there, and you brush your teeth while he is doing his "thing" - he won't fall in because he can hold on to the lid. If you flush the toilet, just once when you put him on, the sound of the water, and the coolness that comes up makes him want to go - you can show him how to hold down his "private" - and that's the beginning of him going later on on his own, when he can stand up and go. Sitting him on backwards really works, because when he has a bowel movement, he won't fall in and it's a lot easier to clean him. With the book, or a toy, it occupies him and he goes poo without any effort, and YOU will slow down,OK! Now try this method, it worked for the woman that taught it to me, and I have passed it on a hundred times and it worked. Good Luck, PS- take a book, magazine in for yourself, set the example. (just don't smoke in the bathroom, if your a smoker)

If he pees in his diaper, take off his diaper and walk into the bathroom. Show him how when he was a little boy he peed in his diapers and explain to him that now that he is a big boy he pees in the potty. Maybe have dad show him how it's done..that can do wonders as well :-)
