I don't think we can really truly know the answer to this in full. God seems to make Him/Herself known to various people in various ways, perhaps based on those peoples' abilities to understand. He has many attributes of a Father, and perhaps that is why he is often depicted as an older man in peoples' minds. In a song I recently heard, based on St. Augustine's writings, God is described as "Beauty Ever Ancient, Beauty Ever New." I think that is an interesting description. Because God is ancient (perhaps why many think of him as an old grey-haired man), and yet he is always ever-new (perhaps why many think of God as a newborn baby, such as baby Jesus, and baby Krishna).
I think it is not wrong to describe God as a Consciousness, that is at least in some ways related to our own consciousnesses. I think to describe Him as Love is also good.
I don't think any of these ways are wrong necessarily, but also, none of them are complete in themselves.

God is Elohim = Father, Word & Holy Spirit. He gives us a conscience. God is Love.
God the Father is too bright & strong for any vision to do Him Justice. Father God is the voice behind the bright cloud. We have seen God the Son, when we saw Jesus. Jesus was/is the express image of God. The fulness of God was/is with Him. God the Holy Spirit has appeared in a vision of a dove with wings. And as fire flames (representing lit oil lamps / annointing) above heads at day of pentecost.
We have also saw a vision of Jesus / Ancient of days and He has hair white like white/wool.

What is God? He is essence. He is the foundation, substance, potential and actuality of all things, seen and unseen. He is represented and alive in everything. He is the interrelatedness of life and the universe. If we could live without Him, we would know nothing but alienation from everything else. We would be insane, if we were conscious at all.
God is the possible, the force that actuates alternatives, that gives meaning to one alternative above another. God is the direction of life and the reason that there is consequence to every behavior, every decision, every action.
The universe is infinite and eternal. Even science recognises this. There was no one 'big bang', but an endless chain of them. Can we conceive of that? A universe without beginning, without end? A universe that goes on for infinity? No. We seek finite concepts to suit our finite grasp. But God, and the universe, resist our preferences. And it's no easier for us to conceive of a limitless universe than it is for us to conceive of a God who validates and embues it. We cannot adaquately conceptualize existance. Nor can we adaquately conceptualize its source.
Yet the universe exists. And so does God.

I Can't believe this!! Everyone thinks God is an old gray haired man with a long beard and sits on a throne......Well He is on a throne...But you need to go to the Bible and read what John saw and you will certainly find out different.....God is to be feared, and whats wrong in our world today is people have no fear of God....
read your Bible and get a true understanding of God and you will not have to ask questions like this.

I once asked someone that, and was told that "God Is Love"
After several years of struggling with religion and belief systems, I am more apt to believe the opposite, that "Love Is God"

God is Hope. We need to believe that we exist for a reason and that there is reason for everything. He is that reason. God gives hope, whether he is a spiritual, religious or mythical being.
