I would suggest you either use VLC player available at http://www.videolan.org , VLC comes with built in codecs for just about all types of video files. Or if you would like to use another player your are going to need the proper codecs. The best available codec pack is FFDSHOW. You can find that @ http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm

You probably don't have the video codec that the avi file was encoded with. You will have to do a search for the codec. To find the codec, you will have to right click on the avi file and hit properites and find it under one of the tabs on the top. Once you have the codec name, you can download it off the internet. If you are using Windows media player, try using a different video player(there are plenty of free ones on the internet)

You are missing something called a codec. AVI files are encrypted with different methods that codecs interpret. Look up CCCP codec pack or Storm Codec pack. Either one of those after you install it will allow you to see the movie and hear it as well.

i'd rather say that apart form searching the codecs foor desired .avi file and getting it installed with your window media player; go for any good avi player like DivX etc,it gives good quality and make you tension or labour free from searching codecs and getting them installed..
