Try using clicker training. Clickers are under $2 at Petsmart. First teach your dog to understand that hearing the click means a reward. Click, reward, repeat 5 or 6 times until your dog gets it. Once this is done, when you take your dog out to go potty, click when he goes where you want him to go and reward with the treat after. Never click without giving a reward. Soon your dog will learn where to go and you can even train to use a specific spot in the yard, which makes for cleaning up much easier for you.
This will take a little time and training, but once you've accomplished it, you'll love it!

Okay, I currently have a 3 month old puppy as well and if you want him to stay on the grass then you have to keep him on the leesh. If you let him run around he is naturally going to go anywhere he wants because he is afterall only a puppy and doesn't know any better yet. You have to train him to stay on the grass.

Trainin a puppy to go where you want him to go is a time consuming task. first you need to know about the learning and unlearning of behavior. consistancy is the key. the use of reinforcemnet and punishment as described by behaviorists is effective in modifing behavior the key to remember is repetition.
repetition will create engrained behavior which will not go extinct easily.
The stories about people who have trained a puppy in a few days, either have anatural abiliy to reinforce the behavior or a low expectation of what house training is.
some sugested reading: Dont Shoot the Dog, by Karen Pryor; Culture Clash, by Jean Donaldson; Animals In translation by Temple Gradin and Catherine Johnson. these trhee books will give you a better knowlege base from which to determine your course of actions with training your Dog. if you do not want to do a lot of reading consult with your veterinarian to find a local trainer to work with.

keep him on a leash it will teach him where he can and can't go and if he does go on the grass make sure you let him know that he was bad. If you don't let the dog know then he will not know it is bad.

I taught mine by taking her outside and praising her when she went on the grass. When she went where she wasn't supposed to I called her a bad dog in a stern voice. When i praised her and said good dog her little tail wagged and it seemed like she wanted to please me.

Try your best to be there and supervise him when he's outside. You may have to supervise him until he's about 6 months old, that way you can help him remember where to go.
