What do I really think?
I think the US had to show some kind of retaliation for the 9/11 twin tower attacks, no matter to whom.
I think US is very eager to control gas/oil supplies.
I think US has a mistaken idea that it can IMPOSE democracy on people who don't really understand or want it.
And I think there are behind-the-scenes, very powerful figures in armament supplies, firms with military contracts,
etc. who stand to make a lot of money out of war, and who encourage it without any regard to human life: hospital supply manufacturers, body-bag makers, all the paraphanalia of war which makes millions and millions of $$$$ for the greedy people who can never have enough money.

It was always known that an invasion would have huge implications on many things, it was just not known that there would be such enduring violence and bloodshed years after the end of the war. I think it was roughly a 20%+20%+20%+20%+20% decision involving the following:
a) preventative: though he was showing compliance with the international community at times his non-compliance gave us the feeling he was hiding these weapons, in spite of the facts.
We could not trust them that they were not planning a 4th invasion of their own (after Iran, Kuwait and the Kurdish people)
b) domestic and Middle East regional security concerns / some countries having a very close relationship with Washington and others having such a bad one that we feared their influence in the area might further grow
c) humanitarian grounds (anger over the many he had victimised & a sense of bringing freedoms to this country and having much to offer through a successful occupation campaign + a sense that this will bring an end to the harsh oil-for-food embargo the people were suffering from)
d) our need for guaranteed access to cheap, abundant oil
e) the economic opportunity associated with seizing control of the Iraqi oil, reconstruction and trade influence on the general economy

You cannot think that the decision was based only on one factor, really. Also, it was calculated that we could quickly replace his ruling regime with another one, just as he has risen to power abruptly and with little violence in 1958. In case it failed, it was thought that a plan B would be to simply put the Bathists back in, which would be easy to do with no other established groups, but with a different & more acceptable leadership.

Well as someone who has been to Iraq and seen the quality of life they have now and believe it was done for right reasons because Saddam was a maniac with too much power, a modern day hitler. He had to be stopped and we did. Iraq is about the war on terror, helping the iraqi people have a better quality of life and rest of the worlds safety security. While you were sitting in your cosy office passing judgement on something you have read in a paper, thousands of security personnel are shutting down terror training camps, breaking up terrorist cells and preventing attacks, allowing you to sleep safely at night. There is just no pleasing some people is there.

I used to think it was just about the oil until I watched "Loose Change 2"
This is available free on the net.
There are a lot of questions here from the 911 events that need to be answered.
looks to me now that America are looking more and more towards world domination.
Watch Loose Change 2 and make up your own mind..

world dominance
oil
the indoctrination of the western beliefs in democracy
soon within a generation the arguing will start with china
as America realises its losing the total power
and beginning to become the second fiddle to the power of china

Foothold in Middle East besides Israel, freeing millions of people, spreading democracy, taking down a crazy dictator (and a possible threat), oil wasnt a reason for invading but it probably helped a little and yeah..Thats about it

This ends up as the US dealing with a third world dictatorship that robs the peasants to support the filthy rich. And if you can't keep the rich happy, they'll behead you. Zoom out, your microscope is too close.

at this point, it's making the best of a bad situation.

We need to restore some stability before the Iraqi government can self-govern.
