My dog used to do that all the time (she would even chew the legs of the wooden chairs and couch pillows) until we bought this non-toxic spray from PetSmart called "Bitter Apple Spray". This spray can also be used on the dog itself if it chews itself and creates 'fur patches'.
This stuff really works and it costs less than $10!!!
Also, buying your dog Dentabones (which clean the teeth and breath) will keep him occupied and so he will most likely chew the bone over furniture or shoes etc...

How old is your dog? Most dogs have the urge to chew until they are about 3 yrs old. Even tho they will have adult teeth in, the teeth are still shifting and settling into their jaw and thus the urge to chew, just as a puppy will, is still going to be present.
My dog was about 3 when it finally stopped with her and never had a problem since. I would suggest considering crating your dog when you can't be right there to watch him or have to leave as this will reduce his ability to chew things you don't want him to.
Also, be sure to have proper doggie chew for him so that he has something he can use to take care of the urge to chew.

Go to the pet store and pick up a spray called Bitter Apple. You spray it on things the dog might chew, and it tastes like crap to them.

Training classes! Plus, keep everything he's not allowed to chew on (shoes, etc.) in a closed closet, and only provide toys made for him to gnaw on. If you catch him chewing on something he shouldn't, take it away, tell him 'no', and give him a chew toy he's allowed to have.

point at what he chewed on and try saying no or bad dog. If that doesn't work, newspaper across the nose probably will
