what happens if i polyurethane over painter's tape... does it behave the same way paint does?

I taped to protect an area during the painting phase of a project. Now i'm ready to seal it with a couple of coats of minwax polycrylic polyurethane. When I tear the tape, will it tear the coats of poly?
