Also any ideas of good areas to live? I'm coming from Scotland and I'm looking for a place to rent for about 2 months. Not too bothered about the location or number of people I'm sharing with as long as it's clean and safe-ish. Just a place to crash really. Also does anyone have any good general tips for a NYC newbie?

craigslist.org is pretty good for that if you're looking for a room to rent.

You may run across listings where people are looking for someone to sublet their entire apartment for a short period of time. You need to be wary of sublets because a lot of them are illegal or are sealed with a verbal contract only. Someone who is subletting their apartment out is supposed to notify their landlord first and get their consent. Many people don't tell their landlord because they are trying to make more money off the deal.
