Vegemite is absolutely horrible to most people who have not grown up on it. People from Australia, the UK, and Canada usually love it. I know you can get it inexpensiveley at Cost Plus World Markets. It tastes kind of like the grimey residue left over from cooking a roast.

Vegemite is very yummy. In fact it is soo good that the USA tried ti ban it there, well really what a load of rot.
Vegemite is our national food and if you haven't grown up with it most likely you won't like it. i have many friends that have tasted it when they come here to Australia and they think it is horrible stuff but me I love it. give me a Vegemite sandwich any day. It is also high in vitamin B and thymine which is very good for you.
""We're happy little Vegemites as bright as bright can be, we all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast lunch and tea,our mummy says we're growing stronger every single day cos we love our Vegemite, we all adore our Vegemite, it puts a rose on every cheek""

It's very salty and slightly bitter. If you haven't been brought up on it, you probably won't ever acquire a taste for it. So it's probably not worth your while buying a whole jar and then having to pay for shipping as well. You'd be better off getting some off your friend, if he/she heads back to Australia, or visiting the country yourself. You'd probably enjoy the holiday a lot more than the Vegemite.

Vegemite (IPA: ['vɛdʒɪˌmaɪt]) is the registered brand name for a dark brown, salty food paste made from yeast extract, mainly used as a spread on sandwiches and toast, though occasionally used in cooking. It is popular in Australia and New Zealand and is known as one of Australia's national foods — it can be found in many Australian diaspora communities such as London. Food technologist Dr. Cyril P. Callister invented Vegemite in 1923 when his employer, the Australian Fred Walker Company, had him develop a spread from brewer's yeast after war had disrupted the supply of imported yeast spreads.

I found it to be too salty, gritty and fatty tasting for my pallet, kind of like eating drippings from the tin on my Grandmothers stove. Although it is reputed to be very healthy kind of like peanut butter, I will stick to peanut butter. Vegemite is most definitely an acquired taste.

I have found some good info for you though, background at Wikipedia, the Vegemite home page and a store on line from which to purchase. Good Luck!
