Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

From my source link below: (Percents are percent of 147184 viruses caught, as I understand the information in the link)

The 147184 virus samples were chosen using VS2000 according to Kaspersky, F-Prot, Nod32, Dr.Web, BitDefender and McAfee antivirus programs. Each virus sample was unique by virus name, meaning that AT LEAST 1 antivirus program detected it as a new virus.

1. Kaspersky version 6.0.0.303 - 99.62%
2. Active Virus Shield by AOL version 6.0.0.299 - 99.62%
3. F-Secure 2006 version 6.12.90 - 96.86%
4. BitDefender Professional version 9 - 96.63%
5. CyberScrub version 1.0 - 95.98%
6. eScan version 8.0.671.1 - 95.82%
7. BitDefender freeware version 8.0.202 - 95.57%
8. BullGuard version 6.1 - 95.57%
9. AntiVir Premium version 7.01.01.02 - 95.45%
10. Nod32 version 2.51.30 - 95.14%
11. AntiVir Classic version 7.01.01.02 - 94.26%
12. ViruScape 2006 version 1.02.0935.0137 - 93.87%
13. McAfee version 10.0.27 - 93.03%

To the person who said Norton is the best, good luck to you when you get infected! NORTON STINKS. I've seen so many viruses on supposedly updated and protected Norton machines, it's insane. They also slow your system down the most of any major antivirus product.

Go to support.microsoft.com
type "anti-virus" into the search bar on the microsoft page. Here you will see various links.. there is one that says free trials, or trial downloads.. click the link. click the vender CA its a 12 month free subscription. ITs the best on the market. Then follow the instructions.. you will get an e-mail that you will have to download the software from. then after that.. go to http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/spybo... (copy paste to your browser.. this will download spybot (antispy program) once you scan your system using both and imunize your system with spy bot you will be home free. dont forget to remove any other antivirus and antispy programs.. these two are the best out there so good luck. you can also download the yahoo antivirus wich will help with pesky tracking cookies.. good luck! and let me know how it goes!

I would check out zdnet.com or cnet.com, they review and test the top antivirus software and give you the option to decided. Just a forewarning, Norton has gone down in the past few years, with companies like Trend Micro gaining popularity.

You can check out a listing of software and ratings here:
