Robert-Robby-Bobby
In Most languages, a W is more like a V or B, so
William-Villiam-Billiam-Bill-Billy
And CH is more like CK, so
Richard-Rickard-Rick-Dick
Most of the names that have diminutives sounding different from the original are from French and German, such as Margaret
Margaret-Mahgaret-Marge or Meg-Peg-Peggy
Hope this makes sense...

Peggy for Margaret comes from Peg, which rhymes with Meg, which is short for Margaret.
I suspect Bobby came about in a similar way (Robert - Rob - Bob).
I don't know about the others, but I'll be watching the answers here to see what others say.

Yeah. I'd like to know how you get Bill out of William. Or Peggy out of Margaret.
