First, do you write it rather Padraig or Padraic ? I know it means Patrick in English but do you prefer the Irish first name or the English one ?

It's a great Irish name and I think it should be spelt the typical Irish way of Padraig. I love traditional Irish names and when I have kids, mine will all be Irish.

I think it depends entirely on where you live, i.e. your cultural context. As an American I would not name a child Padraig (or Siobhan) because no one here knows how to pronounce them and they would be teased all through school. Don't misunderstand - I think both are lovely names. I have a brother-in-law named Padraic. If you are in Ireland, I'd suggest going with the more traditional spelling - but that's your preference, not mine!

if you are irish and proud to be so then padraic, colm and grainne are all fine names.

if you are not irish then to call your children by such names suggests that you are not proud of what you are.

i think a child deserves a name to be proud of, and a name that reflects who they are.

The English equivalent is indeed "Patrick" but it's not pronounced that way.
