I hope I can explain this as easy to understand as possible.
In 2004 while living in Oil City, I had a tooth (molar) that had a cavity. So I got it filled and I thought I wouldn't have to worry about it again. Wrong...a couple months later, the filling fell out. My orthodontist pointed this out, so I went back to my regular dentist to have it repaired. One night when I was able to go to sleep, I had the WORST TOOTHACHE IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS AWFUL!!!!!! I had to take a lot of pain medicines for it all night and into the next day because it hurt so bad. Then, on another visit to the orthodontist about 2 days later, he notices the filling is missing again!!!! So, since now I'm living in another town (Erie/North East), and I have a new dentist and I go to her to get the tooth filled a 3rd freaking time!!! That was in December of 2005. So, I actually thought that I could just get it filled and not have to worry about it! I'm wrong again. In

In July of 2006, I feel this bump on my gum, right below where the tooth that's had so much trauma is. I don't worry about it to much and then about a week later, its still there and hurts a whole lot!!! So on another trip to the orthodontist, he says that it is probably an abcessed tooth and it has to be root canaled. So, when I get back to Erie, I have a list of dentists that "accept" my ACCESS CARD. Out of a list of like 0ver 130 dentist, only two OUT OF TOWN, accept my stupid insurance. Before I can be seen about this, I have to go on an antibiotic. So, I go to my dentist and get a pain medicine and an Penicillin PK. I finish these medicines and try to make an appointment for one of the 2 dentists that accept my insurance, and they say they are filled up with ACCESS patients for like 3 months. So, I try to make a consultation visit and they say since the dentist isn't there, they have to cancel my appointment. By this time, The infection is back and I'm hurting a WHOLE LOT

***I can't get an X-Ray done of the tooth...here's why. With my lovely ACCESS CARD, I had an X-Ray done in 2002, and with this insurance, I can only get it done every 5 years. So, I don't know what to do. What will they do at a consultation at the oral surgeon?? Won't they need to take X-Rays?? GOOD LUCK....... :( **

Yes, it sounds like there is an infection in the tooth. Once you see a bump on the gum, it is usually a sign of an infection. I am sorry to say, but this is what stinks about HMO/Managed Care Insurance plans. And to comment on the First answer, I take offense to comments stating that we are the least caring professionals. I would find it hard to believe, that many other professionals go home at night and call their patients and see how they are feeling, come in on weekends and days off to see emergency patients and work through their lunch to squeeze in patient's with pain and emergencies!
Sorry, onto your problem! It sounds like you will need a root canal (but impossible to tell for sure without looking at an x-ray or clinical exam). One suggestion is that you go and see someone else, preferably someone referred by a friend or family member that you trust (or ask your Orthodontist for a referral). Find out from your insurance company if you can go out of network and if you can, how much of the procedure will be covered. I wouldn't wait too long with this, because an infection can get really big really fast. If these 2 dentists won't squeeze you in as an emergency, then they are not worth your time. You your insurance isn't covering what you need or give you adequate access, then it may be time to switch companies (if possible). I hope this helps, feel better!
** ADDITION
As for you access card that only allows you an x-ray every 5 years, that is absurd!!!! In my opinion, drop that insurance as soon as you can!! Also, get a single (Periapical) x-ray taken to see what is going on, it should only cost between $15-25 dollars. And it also sounds like your dentist is a SCHMUCK, go to someone else. I would never let a patient be in pain and not do anything about it (even if insurance doesn't cover it) most dentist care about their patient and will either take the x-ray at reduced cost or no cost if you can't afford it, just to find out exactly what is going on. FWI: Diagnosing a Root Canal without a recent x-ray is borderline malpractice!!!

I'm not sure what your question is, but here is the information I can give you. The filling was more then likely in a place that youre tounge touched alot. Perhaps it rubbed your tooth in your sleep. This made the filling fall out, and after awhile, the cavite got worse. It sounds like your dentist was trying to save a buck by filling the cavite instead of capping the tooth, ( especially after three failed fillings). Your tooth took an infection, and that traveled to the root. The bump you felt on your gum was a pocket of white blood cells, ( or puss ) building up in the gum trying to fight the infection. If left alone, these blood cells could start to eat away at the bone under your tooth, and really cause damage. If I were you, I would look into getting that tooth capped, or getting it pulled and replaced with an artifical perminant implant.

It sounds like you indeed have an abscess and you will need a root canal. You will also need a crown on top of the tooth after the root canal is complete. When you get the root canal, you'll get a temporary crown while your permanent crown is manufactured. You'll go back in a few weeks to get the permanent crown installed.
Be aware that you'll likely have a co-insurance instead of a co-pay. Most insurance companies will cover major restorative surgery at a certain percentage, and you'll have to cover the rest. Additionally, you can have the tooth pulled and replaced with a permanent prosthetic replacement tooth.

My old dentist done a shitty job, he put filling on my teeth and didn't clean all of the tooth decay i was going to her for years cuz of the insurance! I have a new great dentist now who's fixing all the shitty dental work done years ago i don't have insurance anymore, i pay in cash. i wish i could have choose different dentist back then and didn't care what my insurance company cover and what not! Cuz my teeth worth it. I also don't agree that dentist aren't caring enough, my dentist always squeeze me in when i need to or come to earlier and call me to ask how i feel! Find a good dentist that's a start ask your family or friends i am sure someone knows a good one, that's how i found mine! If your insurance doesn't cover it, just pay for it, it's your teeth! Most of the denstist offer payments plans. Good luck

you are children's enamel are brown and wasting tooth, his guims are diseased, and you might have received him guzzling coke? At three?? Well, what did you assume to occur? Sweets are not a difficulty sparsely as a deal with, and if you happen to honestly blank his enamel thoroughly. Coke is the worst factor you'll be able to provide him! If you do not think me, subsequent time you provide the child coke, positioned a few in a cup and drop a penny in, then go away it for nevertheless lengthy you go away it until you subsequent blank his enamel. three or four hours? all day? All night time? Thn seem how glossy the penny now's. You've simply performed that for your children's enamel - day in, day trip for three years. Stop the coke and watch how so much more fit, happier and higher behaved hebecomes in a question of days. Your dentist was once a ways too well mannered. If you maintain it up he will don't have any enamel by the point he is 7, allow by myself watching like he smokes 60 an afternoon the best way he does now.
