Broad leaves are a common feature in tropical or benign climates where sunlight and water is plentifull. Needles are a common feature in extreme climates be it because water is scarse, like in desertic, rocky regions where cactus are common or in places where there is ice and frost and weak sunlight like Canada. There are of course other additional adaptations to particular climates but that would be part of a different question.

This is a case of species adapting in different ways to their enviornment through evolution. In northern lattitudes where sunlight is at a premium, needle bearing trees would seem to have an advantage in gathering sunlight as long as possible. Also, needle bearing trees have lower wind resistance and are less likely to fall during winter storms.

It is not unusual to find species variation within the same environment as there are many possible adaptations through genetic selection.

Because they are different types of trees: Coniferous or Deciduous (sp). Coniferous are pine trees-which have needles. They do not lose their needles in the winter (although Tamarack trees do). Deciduous trees-which have leaves, turn colors in the fall and lose their leaves in the winter.

Trees with broad leaves need more sunlight-the bigger the leaf, the more sunlight it needs like the basswood tree. If it has a smaller leaf, like say the Weeping Willow, it doesn't need as much sunlight.

well it depends on the environmental conditiond of the tree
if the tree is in the cold regions it will have needles and if they are in a moderate climate or a tropical climate they will have broad leaves =)

It all depends on climatic conditions to conserve water to bring down the rate of transpiration the surface area of the leaf get reduce to needle and such structure will not hold any ice over it.

If timber are deciduous the leaves will continually fall off in autumn and reserve some potential for next spring to augment again besides the undeniable fact that that is not something to do with technology yet mom nature except technology interfered with nature

Because nature is a world of diversity and trees adapted to survive in the environment of their origin.
