The ability to take pictures very close up such as an insect or flower by standing very close.

This is not the same as telephoto where you stand far away and take a close up.

If you have a simple point and shoot type of camera, then Macro mode simply means close-up. If you have a SLR with an actual macro lens, it means that the sensor will record a life-size image of the object, for example, an ant will be life size on the sensor and will cover most of the picture. Although you can make things appear bigger by going in close, macro lenses either allow for a closer working distance or have a telephoto effect (like a telescope).

Macro is a setting that sets fixes the focus for closeups. If you set it on macro, you can get very close to something for a photo. You focus on macro by moving the camera away or toward an object.

Macros are a specific set of automatic steps that your camera follows to obtain a specific picture take. Macros enable your camera for settings that you'd have to set manually, i.e. night shots, outdoors, indoors, animals and pets, etc. They do with a push of a button what experts do manually, thus providing the best picture possible for the specific environment. Consult your owner's manual or call your manufacturer's customer service line to obtain further details.
