From the book: Clinical Chemistry Principles, Procedures, Correlations by Michael L. Bishop, Edward P. Fody, and Larry E. Schoeff

Cholesterol is an unsaturated steroid alcohol of high molecular weight, consisting of a perhydrocyclopentanthroline ring and a side chain of eight carbon atoms.

I'm not really sure how much information you need or at what educational level this project is for. I don't want to go into unnecessary and/or confusing details. If you want more information, email me and I will be more than happy to provide it. I can provide information on the metabolism of cholesterol, different form of cholesterol and each's function, lab testing procedures, interaction with hormones, abnormalities, and clinical significance.

Hope to be of assistance.
